Richard Wright requested this song for his funeral during his lifetime. He asked Durga Mc Broom, a backing singer from the Pink Floyd World Tour, to sing the song at his funeral. There is still an unconfirmed rumor that Durga was accompanied on the piano by none other than John Lord from Deep Purple.

Wonderful reaction. Listened to the song without interruption, increasing the emotional wallop to maximum. That’s good work. It gets better every time you listen to it. You’ll be playing the song when you’re 70, weeping mixed tears of sorrow for the subject matter, death, and joy, for the creation of something so achingly, starkly beautiful. Humans, we’re capable of such deep depravity, and such gloriously wonderful achievement. This song is a tonal monument, set to stand as long as the species does, itself.

25 year old Clare Torry empties her emotional tank on this legendary vocal performance. Created and recorded in one 3 hour session. Clare received 30 pounds for her singing on this song. Double the scale as it was recorded on a Sunday. Man we had good music to listen to back in the day. And now my dear, so have you. You are absolutely precious. Fantastic reaction Gracie. I loved it. All the best, RNB

She sued for writing credit and in 2004 they settled out of court. From then on she's listed as co-writer and received royalties one would expect.

The opening tells us the lie we tell ourselves about death, that it's no big deal that we all have to go sometime, and then you get that wonderful vocal performance by Clare Torry where she expresses the truth about dying and how all these painful feelings come up and the struggle and then final exhaustion. It's very profound. Thank you for just taking it all in and feeling the music. Too many reactors want to look clever and say something which doesn't really fit what's being done with this music. With Pink Floyd, and any song from this era, you need to hear it just the way you listened to it. The studio version, and just letting it wash over you. For an added sense of what the music was made to do you should try and listen to it with headphones sometime.

The vocalist on this song was a department store singer in the U.K. - She was brought into the studio for an afternoon to record this, then went back to her regular job.
@brucerichard3423 жыл бұрын
Just a slight clarification. Clare H. Torry was a professional session vocalist before and after this song. Before she created the vocalizations for this song one of the many gigs she had was to do the vocals on some “Top of the Pops” records. These were records filled with covers of then popular songs sold at department stores all over Great Britain for 39 pence.

Pink Floyd keyboard player Rick Wright wrote this song, which is about life, gradually descending into death. Hence the angrier and more intense first half with a dying person refusing to "go gently into that good night." The second half is gentler, as the dying person gives into the inevitable and fades away.

Good observance and interpretation. Ever wonder why nature decrees we grow old and wither? It is so the soul is aided in shuffling off the mortal coil that no longer can serve a purpose.

Thx Gracie! The song with the most emotional outpouring of singing (by the best band ever), brings tears to the eyes every time I hear. The back story is very interesting of how the album was created, and how the singer (Clare Torry) was hired to come in to the studio and 'ad lib' (and because the DSOTM album was so successful - on the Billboard charts a record 741 weeks in a row - 1973 to 1988!), she later sued the band to get co-songwriting credit, and I'm assuming a pretty hefty $$$ amount. Listen (or react) to the entire album from front to finish - it is absolutely phenomenal.

I loved your reaction to the song. Your reaction fit the emotion. On another note, the vocal gymnastics of Clare Torry, who recorded this in 1 take, is impressive. When Pink Floyd took this song on the road, they broke up the vocals in 2, giving each of 2 women half the vocals. Clare did not travel with the group, so 2 different women handled the vocals in live performances (which can be found on youtube).

When we think that originally, The Great Gig in the Sky was an innocuous track that was supposed to fill the void ending the side A. Rick Wright had composed The Great Gig in the Sky a long instrumental on the piano then called The Mortality Sequence or The Religion Song which did not yet include the lyric song of Clare Torry but a reading of the Bible, then it was communications from astronauts NASA on a mission.

Pink Floyd 1987 Great Gig In The Sky Most don't hear the lyrics at the very beginning: (And I am not frightened of dying Any time will do I don't mind why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime) Then Pink Floyd hired Clare Torry (In my opinion the best vocalist ever available on studio cut) to do the vocals but there were restrictions she was to use no words but convey the cut. This was Clare Torry's response which she stated she apologized for after doing but Pink Floyd loved it and used it in the production. There have been many very good vocalists doing this but Clare Torry did it the very best.
