The instrument he’s playing is a lap steel guitar. It is an instrument that is specifically designed to be played with a slide. They are much more common in country and blue grass, than in rock music, but when someone like David Gilmour is playing it, it can do anything. When I first heard this song back in the 90s, it made me think that Pink Floyd come full circle - and I’m sure that’s not unintentional: some of Pink Floyd, earliest songs, when Sid Barrett was their guitarist, were full of slide guitar, and here we are, listening to a David Gilmore, who has advanced in age, playing a song about looking back on his youth. I think it’s a very intentional nod of the head to Syd, and Pink Floyd only youth. Either way, it’s absolutely marvellous and I love it.

The instrument David plays in the last solo of "High Hopes" is a pedal steel guitar. He also uses it on "One of These Days" in the Pulse concert. Since you obviously enjoy David's solos you should try "Sorrow" from the same Pulse concert. Pink Floyd is just special! I enjoy your reactions! Thanks!

I've noticed many have mentioned the Division Bell , I haven't heard it , but I've often pondered , having not heard the Album , why Division Bell , an archaic tradition used in the house of Parliament , when a Division is to be voted on , when the Division Bell rang , you have 5 minutes to get to chambers to yote on said Division , so , is it a political album , pointing out our Antediluvian traits that clash with our modern world , you know , where people steal the milk out of your tea , curious , did they like how it sounded , nothing at all to do with the actual Division Bell , just wondered , has anyone else , as an aside ever thought interesting name , given it's origins

Wanna hear a great acoustic solo ? Try Wish You Were Here. He vocally harmonizes with his guitar note perfect. Same show. The studio version is awesome but it's awesome to see as well. I've seen Pink Floyd 4 times starting in 73. I was 13. My favorite band. 100 %... When people try to box them in as "Rock and Roll" I laugh. While bands like Yes, who I've seen a few times, and love, or Rush, who I never saw live, have very distinctive sounds, are generally tagged "Prog-Rock", I don't see Floyd fitting in there either. Such a great song saw them live in Boston incredible. But one thing that has always blown me away is the back up singers tremendous. Growing up was in love with Rachel Fury! The back up singers always seem like they add a lot and even their hand gestures. Keeping the rhythm is incredible.

Pink Floyd is not only ear and eye candy, but, emotional movement. The music tones, tempo, and use of chords can literally bring tears to your eyes or power to your spirit. As i was watching you and listening, i know the song and was watching your first time hearing... I mean, feeling it. Brit Floyd is a tribute band that is the worlds best, note for note, stage show, lasers, etc.. they are on tour in the states i believe soon. Check your area and get tickets in the middle up a little high (hopes)... thank you for the excellent reaction video. I've been a big fan of Pink Floyd from _"Saucerful of Secrets"_ (their second album). When _"The Division Bell"_ came out I listened to it once, and thought "Eh, not as strong as their earlier albums". I listened again, and thought "Just not the same punch". I listed again. And again And again. And finally I said to myself, "I've just played this album 10 times in a row, so there's got to *something* about this album which is really connecting with me!". I still play it fairly often. The instrument he played while sitting down is usually called a "console steel guitar" or a "pedal steel guitar". He also plays it on some other (much older) Pink Floyd songs.

I was 20 when Division Bell came out, and I had been deep into Pink Floyd since I was 14. Next year, its 30 years since this came out, and ithis band has been the soundtrack for most of my life. This song makes me trsvel in time. To sweeter, slower, brighter days that I was lucky enough to live through. Love your reactions man. Wonderful reaction as always. Indeed I could probably provide 20-30 more tracks that would be "bangers". But, knowing the entire catalog quite well, they do have 5 or so songs that you probably wouldn't choose to listen to a second time. But, considering the wealth of phenomenal music they produced it's easy to admit. Seeing them live was a religious experience for sure. I will never forget that night! Have also seen Roger Waters four times, and it is, if you enjoy his writing, outstanding. The Floyd stuff he does live is not too far from the original. However, the unique and genuine feel that David, Richard and Nick create is undeniably theirs. Any track from "Wish You Were Here", "Animals" or "Dark Side of the Moon" will be great. But, honestly, Their creativity is off the charts. So take your pick from any era.

So glad you did this version before you did the studio version!! Only because people think David Gilmour is doing his guitar solo with a regular guitar. The instrument you see him playing is called a pedal steel guitar some call it a lap steel however for it to actually be a lap steel you have to play it in your lap! He plays the same instrument on the second half of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and also the song "One of These Days"! One of these days is played live during this same concert. Mr Gillmore is actually a talented musician which I say on purpose as an understatement!!

I feel so lucky to have been at one of these nights at Earl’sCourt London. Magical, the greatest concert I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot. Nick Mason, Richard Wright and David Gilmour are the Floyd sound. Brilliant musicians. Tight controlled drums, hypnotic keyboards, songbird and hard rock guitar. Shame Roger Waters had such massive ego that he couldn’t see what they each bought to the table. Can you imagine Comfortably Numb without David Gilmour. Time without the superbly drum solo at the start. Shine on you crazy diamond without the beautiful ‘less is more’ beginning on the keyboards. The tempo of each track is born from this ability to take us on a journey. Then combined with Waters ability to tell a story is the whole story of Pink Floyd. I was lucky to see them play together at Live 8. The greatest band of all time in my eyes. The most complete band.

This was Pink Floyd's final track on the last album they made while in active service, and if you know Floyd history, you can catch many of their career details in the lyrics. One thing you might've missed in the video, due to your pause, was in the middle of the second verse, the line "sleepwalking back again," echoed on both the stage and on the video screen. Great reaction as usual Polo!! The instrument David ended with ( on this video, in other performances such as The AOL Sessions David concluded with acoustic) was a pedal steel guitar , or also called a slide steel guitar. Used often in American Country songs.

Man, you really summed it up. Floyd's sound actually has evolved here and there over time, one album is not... necessarily the same as the next, but even with the departure of Waters (despite him undeniably being key to the composition of previous albums, I say good riddance) the FEEL of Pink Floyd - or the feelings they evoke - manages to remain very much the same. I don't know honestly how The Division Bell is ranked by critics against the rest of PF's corpus, but I've always loved it and felt it was really a really solid follow-up by Gilmour.

I agree with you completely on everything you said. And I love this album so much. I know a lot of people say it’s not a “real” Floyd album because of Waters not being there, but screw it, it’s a FANTASTIC album. I can respect what he contributed to and meant for the band throughout its existence and also say it was time for him to go, and this album to me proves the rest were more than capable of holding the band together without him. I think it includes some of Gilmour’s most beautiful and moving music ever made.
