Pink Floyd, featured on their 1967 debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
Sam was simply Barrett's Siamese cat (and is referred to as such in the first line: "Lucifer Sam, Siam cat"); the track was originally called "Percy the Rat Catcher" during the recording sessions, which took place between April and June 1967.
Lucifer Sam, siam cat
Always sitting by your side
Always by your side
That cat's something I can't explain
Ginger, ginger, Jennifer Gentle you're a witch
You're the left side
He's the right side
Oh, no
That cat's something I can't explain
Lucifer go to sea
Be a hip cat, be a ship's cat
Somewhere, anywhere
That cat's…

You can always tell a Syd Barrett song...he had a passion for "bending" the second or third line of any quatrain, and taking a harmony in a weird and interesting direction before crashing it back into the main theme. Kept you thinking.

My god he was only 20 or 21 when Piper was released. He must have written some of the material even earlier. The level of genius is incredible at such an age. It sounds like he had been writing and playing forever.

This song is essentially an ode to Syd Barrett's cat, Sam. However, it was speculated that it might refer to another man in some kind of relationship with Jenny Spires, who was Barrett's girlfriend at the time. In the line, "Jennifer Gentle you're a witch," "Jennifer Gentile" refers to Spires in this interpretation.

@@anthonyryan998 Syd was more or less forced out of the band because he didn't want to play the role of "pop icon" and be told to mold his music to suit a mainstream audience. Waters had become confident in his songwriting and was ready to take the band Ina new direction so they did. I don't think Syd really lost control until many years later when he realized what he missed out on
@violentomar
@violentomar 2 жыл бұрын
@@claytonp1111 uh no. He was already exhibiting symptoms of burnout while in the band partially due to the drugs and possibly a preexisting issue with paranoid schizophrenia that was brought out by the drugs and the stress from the record company putting pressure on him to write more songs. Things like going on stage after pouring a whole tub of gel on his head and it would be dripping off his head the whole show. Or going on stage and playing the same chord the whole show. Or de-tuning his strings mid song. Or forgetting lyrics altogether or simply repeating the same lines over and over again. It got to the point they had to bring Gilmore in to play the guitar with Syd. First they were both plugged in and Syd would sing and play with Gilmore picking up the slack when Syd checked out mentally on stage. Eventually they unplugged Syd's guitar amp and Gilmore played all the guitar parts and so that Syd could focus on the lyrics. That didn't work so they stopped picking him up for shows and thought they could copy the Beach Boys model where Wilson stayed behind and simply wrote songs and recorded with them in the studio. When they got Syd into the studio he was incapable of writing anything new. All songs on his two solo albums were songs (most half completed) that he had written or began writing years before. Waters and Gilmore produced his solo records despite Syd not being in Pink Floyd anymore. It took Waters and Gilmore an enormous amount of patience to help him finish the songs. He would start playing something then drift off mentally and they would have to play the part back to him and coax him back to reality for a bit longer with words like "... and then, Syd? What goes next? What do you think of this?" They took several takes of each track and had to try to piece together the best parts to finish the albums. Even then you can hear how rough and unpolished it all is. During the outtakes you can hear Syd is just spaced out. When it came time for him to play a show for the solo albums he literally walked off stage mid song and left the band just hanging. After that he turned into a recluse and the guys didn't see him for a couple years when he showed up to their recoding of Wish You Were Here. He had a shaved head and was so overweight that they didn't recognize him and they asked one of the people at the session who that person was only to he told it was Syd. Long story short his decline began when he starting taking of LSD and other drugs and he got progressively worse as the band got bigger and stress increased. His body and mind couldn't handle it with the paranoid schizophrenia taking hold. It's not like he did LSD one time and it fried his mind, it was gradual and progressed over a couple years.

For those who do not know, most of this footage comes from the 14-Hour Technicolor Dream concert on April 29, 1967. It and the band footage, shot weeks earlier in studio, are from Peter Whitehead’s Tonite Let’s All Make Love in London. Lennon and many other musicians made their way down to check it out. The woman with the daffodil in her mouth is Sue Kingsford, model who lived in the same (infamous) building at 101 Cromwell Rd with Syd and other bohemian intellectual acid freaks and mystics of all sorts. The girl shown earlier dancing by herself may be Emily Young, known as “the psychedelic schoolgirl,” inspiration for “See Emily Play,” who is today England’s greatest sculptor. These are “the beautiful people” that Lennon wrote about in “Baby You’re a Rich Man.” “Lucifer Sam” was heavily influenced by Syd’s first guitar hero - Hank Marvin of The Shadows.

SYD BARRETT a SHADED BEAUTY; a WASTED MIND (from drugs); a TRUE GENIUS who left a precious legacy to the whole world and to future generations: PSYCHEDELIC MUSIC. Barret writes some songs of that musical genre, never heard before, around YEARS 1965/1966 and anticipates the already famous BEATLES who will "give birth" to the famous album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967; this detail of the musical "authorship" of PSYCHEDELIA says a lot about the innate qualities possessed by SYD BARRET. I repeat the adjectives with which I describe SYD BARRETT from my point of view: a TRUE GENIUS; the CREATOR of PSYCHEDELIC MUSIC; a PRECURSOR who musically anticipated his times: a musician who had VERY CLEAR IDEAS in his mind when he "punched" the guitar strings and sang over them HARMONIES AS WONDERFUL as they were DELICIOUS. I would add that I still consider the album THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN, in which BARRET's work is predominant, "a relic" and those "out of time" songs will pave the way for the very first PINK FLOYD with DAVID GILMOUR . BARRETT's two solo albums from 1970 are still to be appreciated even now despite having already celebrated "53 BIRTHDAYS"...Unfortunately BARRETT's musical lucidity was unfortunately too short-lived, otherwise today HE would undoubtedly be on the PODIUM OF BEST MUSICIANS IN THE WORLD: SYD BARRETT will still have a VERY important place in many hearts of people of all ages FOREVER...!!! R.I.P. Syd 💔 ❤

That's the kind of guitar playing that made David Gilmour want to eat his elbows when he first joined the band...lol
@tool_fighter

There were things that Barrett could do on guitar that neither Gilmour or anybody else could touch. Sadly his best playing was in '66 and not recorded. And if you listen to some live performances of Dave in the years that followed, he was god-awful at times. He did eventually develop into quite a guitarist though. Best not to compare them.

@@tool_fighter Syd, being so "good looking" is singing in video's, maybe live, but If you can't see him playing the guitar up close, what makes you think he's better than David? Syd isn't even rated with Best Guitarist!
