This is the big one. When you get over comfort braking, you will become much more fluid and ironically you feel more in control. Scan along way ahead to quickly identify those sections you can charge. The question I started to ask myself was "can my bike deal with this next section"? That really helped me. Once your experience gets to the point that your forward trail scanning knows what your bike can deal with, you get the courage to get off the brakes and ride the section

Same here, always struggling with comfort braking and loose of control due to this. Will set up targets on some home trail sections to try improving on this. Me too. I try to keep the pointers in mind when I'm riding, then I feel myself flying way too fast and I can't remember if I need to be high up or lower down on my bike..then I just hop off. Can't wait till I get to the comfort breaking point.

Big thanks from Hood River, Oregon( biiiitchin riding) !! Been watchin instructional vids on turning and braking from whom ever puts them out. A big help ! Recently have been reconnoitering a considerable labyrinth of dirtbike trails in the local offroad area - Post Canyon, puttin a perpetual Mona Lisa smile on my face !! Steep, loose, chunky descents. And getting lots of chance to use proper body positioning in turns and forcing myself to let off the brakes in turns and over obstacles and brake before. Your vid is clear and easy to ingest and helped alot !! Got a good example of not braking like I could have comin down a REALLY steep dirt bike section -65+ degrees - called Impossibles. It is pure dirt and when it's damp and not dug up from dirt bikers rallying up it .. it is a real kick !! Drops a good 100 ft so braking is imperative. Garth Hardin on youtube - "2021-7-7 Impossibles KO Krash !!!" Ride Jump or Wither !!

The q I still have is 1) what to do if your just coming in too hot and have to continue breaking into the corner and 2) when to shift weight, if your meant to be back on breaking but forward for aggressive turning, and breaking late ?

I find that during panic breaking I end up braking too hard, and end up over the front bars. This video has been helpful. I raced BMx way back in the 1980’s. We didn’t have front brakes, so this whole mountain biking thing in my 50’s is difficult. I’ve gone over the front bars, as the shock compressed way too many times

Great framing of the two different types of braking, I've understood these intuitively, but never as a framing to make it stick. Braking is the skill that defines speed and confidence. Getting synched with one's bike and the trail and it's available traction. Getting on and then off and then back on WITHOUT locking up on the ungrippy parts or taking the braking deep into a corner. I have one pushback on brake lever position, I adjust my brakes to grab immediately, any lag in travel causes a lag in the tires grabbing the trail. Think about a scenario in which you only have 15 feet of clean trail between a set of tree roots and the next corner and you're traveling 20 mph (36.6 ft/sec). If it takes 30 msec vs. 60 msec each time the brakes are applied, that it be 13 vs. 15 ft of applied braking. Add that up over a hundred corners and you've hundreds of feet farther down the trail. I suggest there be another video showing how mal-adjusted brake levers can cause havoc. Brake stroke consumes time. It would be great to record times from engagement to tractive effort applied the surface.

First two tips: I'm WAY outside of that; just gunna ignore where to set the levers..... Third tip: great, keep COG in the middle of the wheels. Fourth tip: Yes. Moar. Front. Brake. Fifth tip: Yes. Brake where's it's flat and grippy and STRAIGHT. 8:27 this is the best part. Six: This is advanced shit. If you can brake WAY early into a turn and be off of them before you hit the chunk/berm, you're golden. This feels like you're taking it easy but it will give you killer Strava times... GREAT VIDEO A+++
