Effing fantastic! David has to have one of the most underrated voices in rock history All 3 parts of the Narrow Way are the best cuts on Ummagumma and some of Gilmour's best songs in his career.

@@RoosterStone Nothing was said about Gilmour being a good songwriter; I've always said his lyric writing is a joke. But on Ummagumma, back when even the brilliant Roger Waters was finding his way as a writer, it was Gilmour who happened to shine. And given the lack of writing accomplishments in his PF career, Gilmour's contributions on Ummagumma stand out.

I always thought this song was a hidden gem on Ummagumma (sadly, the rest still makes me shudder). Some of the sounds and techniques that emerged during the more well-known Floyd can be heard in this piece. The chord progression is really interesting and David's voice is sublime. The only thing that's missing is one of David's signature guitar solos during the outro. Not sure he had refined his sound yet when this was recorded. It would intersting to hear the song revisited with a more fully developed ending (along the same lines as Fat Old Sun).

One of the PF-trademarks featured in this song: the Wright/Gilmour unison harmony singing on the refrain. Their voices in fact were so similar that can provide the illusion of ONE voice split in two making harmony. So do they on Julia Dream, Echoes and Breathe. One of their strong points.

Following the path as it leads towards The darkness in the north Weary stranger’s faces show their sympathy They’ve seen that hope before [Chorus] And if you want to stay for a little bit Rest your aching limbs for a little bit For you the night is beckoning And now you can’t delay You hear the night birds calling you But you can’t catch the words they say Close your ears and eyes, be on your way [Verse 2] Mist is swirling, creatures crawling Hear the roar get louder in your ears You know the folly was your own But the force behind can’t conquer all you fears [Chorus] And if you want to stay for a little bit Rest your aching limbs for a little bit For you the night is beckoning And now you can’t delay You hear the night birds calling you But you can’t catch the words they say Close your ears and eyes, be on your way [Verse 3] Throw your thoughts back many years To the time when love was life with every morning Perhaps a day will come When the lights will be as clear as on that morning [Chorus] And if you want to stay for a little bit Rest your aching limbs for a little bit For you the night is beckoning And now you can’t delay You hear the night birds calling you But you can’t catch the words they say Close your ears and eyes, be on your way

@@FLASHAHOLIC_TV Songwriting is more than just the words. It's the union of music and words. (I'm a published poet, as well as an amateur guitarist, but I can't write a song to save my life.) The chord progressions and structure make me believe this is proto-Comfortably Numb. At 3:28 you can also hear that Roger Waters will use the same bass fill in Breathe (In the Air). Specifically right before the “For long you live” parts. All in all, a massively under appreciated Pink Floyd track.
