The Oxford Canal is 78 miles long and links Oxford with Bedworth/Coventry via the major towns of Rugby and Banbury. A number of fishing clubs and associations control the fishing. In the Oxfordshire region, Oxford itself as well as Lower Heyford to Enslow is largely controlled by Oxford & District AA and it's member clubs. North Oxford AS control a short length from Oxford to Kidlington. Kidlington AS control much of the water in the Kidlington region. From Fenny Compton through to Heyford is a long length controlled by Banbury & District AA. Much of the fishing is day tickets on the bank, but much cheaper if you purchase a book via local Oxfordshire and some Warwickshire tackle shops.

You're session & catching an unexpected chublette reminded me of an "incident" Jon = Years ago, I was fishing a 250+ pegger team match on the Grand Union. I was late getting to my peg because I had to drop off a team mate at the other end of the match length. I was hectlcly tackling up when the angler next to walked up & asked if there were in chub in the stretch. I reliably told him that the stretch wasn't like the Oxford canal a few miles away, and I'd never seen a single chub caught in over 15 years of fishing the venue. He walked back to his peg in time for the start whistle. I was still tackling up. When the whistle went, I fired out a pinch of pinkies & casted my pinkie baited waggler over the top, and proceeded to finish tackling up my pole rigs, landing net, mix groundbait etc. ... I finally sat on my seat box 5 minutes later looking for my missing waggler. I struck in bewilderment, and a near 4lb chub was safely in the landing net a few minutes later. I caught 3 and a half pounds of other bits, plus a smaller chub of about a pound & a quarter. I won the match & so did my team. I'm not boasting! Those bonus chub were pure freaky flukes & jammy, & unheard of by everyone who had fished that venue before and since. I was also lucky not to get my head punched by that next peg angler! He wasn't happy or friendly with me because he was convinced that I'd told him bullsh*t..... I hadn't though! Id been honest! ..... it was very embarrassing, but bloody funny when the other match anglers heard the story back at the pub prize giving. I got a hell of a load of banter crap, and got called "unsportsmanly & a blaggard hustler" (tongue in cheek cos they were trying to wind-up that poor next peg angler 😂😂

Wasn't Stoke Bruerne by any chance was it? That's one bit of the GUC I know has always held them. A few lesser known bits in Warwickshire too...

Nah Jon, i was pegged on the GU in one of the short pounds by the Fosse Way roadbridge. The match length was from Leamington to Bascote = that's what my fluke more freaky lucky, and so damp funny 😂 lol. Mind you, I've been on the receiving end of some freaky flukes = I was fishing a popuar evening open match at Rowington years ago (I think you'll know the venue?). I was sneakily doing well on hempseed at 4 metres , when I heard a "gasp" which made me look at the angler on my right. He'd been fishing at 3metres with a whip, & hadn't caught much. But his whip was bent over & he was slowly raising a "thing" to the surface, that had less life in it than a sack of rotten potatoes! ... He even stared at it, motionless for a few seconds, before pushing out his landing net & netting it. I thought that it must have been a human body part, by his gazed frozen reaction! .... until "the thing" came to life in his landing net = a 11lb + mirror carp! My absolutely gutted stomach feeling soon turned to total amusement & laughter! 😂.... you get jammy in fishing, so you have to accept jammy when other people do..... that was proper revenge on my "jammy" though 😂😂

@@JonArthur Well I would never have guessed. I was told off by Polly many, many moons ago on the GUC at Slapton for fishing too close to him (and his Dad and brother too I think). I was too young to know better at that age. I could see he was catching and wanted to fish close to where they were catching. My angling etiquette is a bit better these days :-D ;-)

Thanks Jeff. Pinkies just keep really well in winter and so long as they're chilled down well. I never ever put them in a tub with the lid on as they can sweat and escape. I often bag them up with no air for a 2-3 days then let them come around for 24hrs before repeating this. Work with big maggots too.

Thanks Trev, these short sessions are all about trying to travel light and keep things pretty simple, so hemp is a luxury rather than a necessity. I would've fed it with the pinkies if I had some, but personally leave a 'caster and hemp' combo for positive summer sessions on a canal. As a former Shakespeare Superteam member our whole team were great at catching on hemp on the cut. It helped us win the Division 1 National one year and I've spent years fishing it on the canals, so I will definitely do a summer hemp vid one day. In winter, though, I think casters on their own or with just a little bit of chopped worm is a much safer route, which you'll hopefully see working its magic in my next vid... ;-)

Pinkies keep for ages in winter and/or if they're chilled. I sometimes also bag them up for several days then let them breathe again before repeating. That also prolongs their life.

Just the hedge on these light mini missions. I have al sorts of skid bungs. Some old discontinued Maver EVA foam ones, some green Sensas ones and in my main bag the new Matrix MTX Section Protectors.

Jon, can you help with the shots you use for pole floats 0.1 to 0.5,not the pattern the size and numbers that you use, ive got a chart from google but apart from its been off each time i used it, none have any for 0.13.cheers,

If you're a beginner, I would stick to No11, No10 and No8 shot and only use smaller No12s for 'trimming' or fine tuning. Place the trimming shot above the other shot. (very approx guide off the top of my head as all floats differ) 0.1g 5xNo11 or 3xNo10 0.2g 8xNo11 or 5xNo10 0.3g 7xNo10 0.4g 9xNo10 or 4xNo8 and 2xNo10 0.5g 6xNo8 or 5xNo8 and 2xNo10

I've got a lot of friends who are also struggling on the canals, despite the sunny weather. I think they're shoaled up wherever there are boats or obvious features plus predation is bad with pike, perch and zander with the water so clear. Roach, perch and rudd also begin heading for their spawning grounds Feb onwards.

They’re exactly that, depth markers. Just a handy reference thats always by my side. Tape every 6in, although im gonna redo it neater with a silver Sharpie if I get a spare minute.

The gudgeon population is 1% of what it once was, largely because of zander, crayfish and other predators. Lucky to see one in the Oxford Canal now. Used to be able to catch 100 without trying... :-(
