Bravo my friend. You've done it again. What a wonderful analysis on something I would never have known about if it weren't for you.

Beautiful series, great video as always. I watched one Stray Cat Rock movie years ago and loved pretty much everything about it, especially the cinematography, costumes, colours and visual finesse. School of the Holy Beast might be my favorite movie I've seen when it comes to artful, giallo-esque exploitation.

Thanks for watching. I’m glad you brought up how well they’re made technically. Almost everyone I know who watches these films are surprised at the level of artistry and aesthetic integrity.

Awesome take! I just did a deep dive on the pinky violence "genre," delving deep into some of the same history, but focusing more on Toei and the idea of what constitutes a "pinky violence" film. Kozma's article was in my research as well. I almost created a section within the video dedicated to her take, but figured at over an hour in length already - my video was too long as it was. Great topic! Great video!

Weird Cinema Thanks buddy. Wow, you’ve taken on Toei Pinky Violence as a whole? That’s impressive - it’s such a huge topic. Can’t wait to see it. I was going to address the Toei association with Piny Violence, but it’s just too vast for my patients atm. It’s great that someone like yourself had the discipline to do it though, it’s needed.

EastAsianCinemaClub it was a massive undertaking and still could require further dissection even with an hour long video. There’s only so much that I, as a fan who does not speak Japanese, can research and understand on my own. Thankfully, my buddy Mikko speaks and reads the language and has probably written more about these films than anyone else here in the West. He lives in Japan and has frequently went to showings of these films. And he’s in the process of going through the pinky violence book and Norifumi Suzuki’s book. Both served as sources for us, trying to be as factual as we possibly could without regurgitating a lot of the same old inaccuracies found on Wikipedia. But anyway, didn’t mean to highjack the topic! Truly loved your video, as well as many of your previous videos!

Weird Cinema Yeah, that’s part of the reason why I backed away from a comprehensive video on Toei Pinky Violence and focused more on the specific analysis of the Sukeban. But, you’ve done a great job. Does Mikko have any content available? I’m the same, I can’t read Japanese - my main area of research is Hong Kong cinema - so I rely heavily on Japanese researchers when tackling Japanese cinema.

@@EastAsianCinemaHistory A lot of what Mikko writes is in his native Finish language, such as on the website Elitisti: www.elitisti.net/haku/toimittaja/mikko_koivisto/ But he does contribute on a lot of English message boards and on facebook (he goes by hungfist here and posts tons of interesting information: www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&p=181441&fbclid=IwAR1mXfpwHfDPN43CHETbTEQPMXP0QdHZuzGYdCleDmZkDGezXt6GLArepnY#p181441). I was going through the video in 15 minute sequences with him just going back and forth trying to get as accurate of information as possible.

I got the Pinky Violence box set, around the time I got the movie, "Hause'. Their was a tag sale that weekend with this lady who travelled around Asia, and she had all of these Japanese prints, and books on Bali, but, I remember "The Cat" poster that was on the inside garage door, indicative of the cover, of "Hausu", that was coincidentally there, has me working in the genre all of the time because it was such a pleasant and notable recollection.

Do you think there is some kind of continuation of this genre in Sion Sono's movies? or is it an overstatement?

There is definitely a continuation. For me anyway - especially in Sion Sono’s work.

So I've fallen in love with this genre and I have a question: whenever a showdown is about to happen, there's almost always a scene where the bosses half-kneel, extend a hand and say their pedigree of bad-assery. My question is, is this specific to Sukeban movies or is this something in Japanese culture that I'm only just seeing now?
@EastAsianCinemaHistory
@EastAsianCinemaHistory 4 жыл бұрын
😂 I know exactly what you mean. I don’t think it’s specific to Sukeban movies because you see similar gestures in Toei productions - especially their TV series like Super Sentai etc. It might be an epic development from the old Japanese combat traditions of stating your pedigree/status/qualifications before kicking some ass.

Thanks for the reply! It's kind of cool because it reinforces the idea that they have their own code of conduct that tells the straight world to get bent.
