Accept your thoughts johnny.pinnawala elephant orphanage is a place where elephants are protected for their life time.because they are not able to survive in the wild sri lankan wild life authority take responsibilty to take care of them.but udawalawe is a different scenario.it has elephants who were injured or special requirement needed ones to care for just short period of time.when they are in good health condition or full fill their requirements wild life authority would leave them back to the jungle.thats the two reasons for elephant orphanage and udawalawe ath athuru sewana.

More than this, acts of some owners and caretakers of tamed elephants distracts certain portion of tourists. 05-Do all elephants rescued or orphaned? No, some of them are born here under captive conditions. 08-Do they release back to the wild? Sometimes we do, because many of them were born under captive conditions. They are hard to defense in natural conditions. Under prolong rehabilitation programme, we were able to release two elephants to the forested facility maintain by Department of Wild Life Conservation. 10-Why do you chain elephants? All elephants that are living in the Orphanage are under semi wild and adults are very strong and weighed about 4-5 tons. Hence, it is not an easy task to control such a large animal. The chain is just hanging around its neck and connect to fore limb to use in an emergency and this prevent the elephant running amok in an event of an unforeseen incident. During veterinary procedures, the foot chain serves as safety device. When attending an elephants for treatment and management chains are required to restrain the animal. So chains are necessary to keep the elephant prevent harming himself when running and use to tie them at such a time in order to keep him off from public.
@learn12324 жыл бұрын
03-From where do elephants come to PEO? Orphan elephants are directed from Department of Wildlife Conservation. Whenever they became orphan in the wild due to many reasons. (e.g. Mothers died or killed) 04-Why was it necessary to bring it to the orphanage? Because Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is the ex situ conservation facility established to accommodate orphan elephant.

Hi Jonny and Christina, thanks a lot for promoting my motherland paradise on the earth to the entire world and hope you guys are having the best time ever, I just wanted to enlighten on Pinnawela elephant orphanage. Elephant orphanage at Pinnawela is a place where elephants are protected for their lifetime because most of them elephants cannot survive in the wild , these are elephants that was in captivity by individual in the past or was under labour captivity as working elephants or are abandoned, injured or other unforeseen reasons they were brought to Pinnawela, of course you may have seen some are chained but hope that you have noticed that almost 98% of them aren’t chained, the reason for very small numbers are chained is because either they are very aggressive or new to the orphanage, once they were identified as non-aggressive they will be unchained like the rest of them , I bet you may not have seen any elephants are used or torched for any work purposes at the centre. Have a wonderful time and explore more in the paradise.
@JohnnyFD4 жыл бұрын
All may be true, but the question to ask Pinnawela is: how many Elephants have they released by into the wild? The answer is zero. They are kept there for profit and show. It's better to promote the national parks or transit home where the Elephants can be free.

@Johnny FD You seem to be basing your video on the opinions of an ill-informed blogger, not intelligent research. All that this will do is stop the funding that is absolutely necessary for this orphanage that had served orphaned and injured elephants for decades. Elephants are not dogs and they do not adapt to introduced environments. Most elephants live for over 80 years. For 25 years - up until the end of the war - the orphanage received hundreds of injured and orphaned elephants. For decades this place took care of them, fed them, released them where possible. This is not America and these are no race horses. We don't shoot them dead just because one breaks a leg. We take care of them for life, chain or no chain. Period. Disappointing really.

Hi Johnny, great video again. Btw, elephants in Pinnawala are living there because they are unable to return to the wild and survive due to various reasons. Some of them were sick, injured and needs continuous special care and attention. Some of them were born in the orphanage itself and they don't know how to live in the wild. Regarding chaining the elephants, only the teenage male elephants are chained during their musth to prevent them from doing any harm to the people and most importantly to the other elephants because they get extremely aggressive during that time period. There's about 30 acres of land for this orphanage and elephants can roam freely other than those few who are chained. Orphanage doesn't torture or keeping elephants as slaves. I'm pretty disappointed with Sri Lanka Tourism for not explaining these to you.
@JohnnyFD4 жыл бұрын
Sri Lanka is fortunate that it's one of the few countries in the world that we can see Elephants in the wild. Pinnawela may have started with good intentions, but the fact is that they never release Elephants back into the wild or into the national parks, even if they are healthy. They also don't castrate or neuter adults, so the cycle continues where more babies are born into captivity. Elephant Transit Home is the better alternative for sick or orphaned Elephants. Let us support them instead of defending Pinnawela.
@SasankaYakandawala4 жыл бұрын
@@JohnnyFD Elephants are complex creatures with deep social ties to other elephants. You can’t just release elephants to the wild once they have spent years and years in captivity. They will not/ can not survive. Pinnawala houses and cares for elephants who were orphaned at a young age or are in need of continued care ( ex: there is an elephant who lost its leg to a land mine last I remember), these elephants who were taken into pinnawala at a young age ( unlike some other animals like tigers, leopards etc) can not be released to the wild after growing up...even if they are completely healthy. It has nothing to do with their “health” condition, it has to do with the social structures of elephants in the wild. If these elephants are released they will die. The elephant transit home, as the name implies is their for elephants who are relatively grown up and those who need minor treatment and/or elephants who are recovering after receiving treatment, like a convalescent home. They are not removed from the wild for a long time and hence can be returned to the wild without issue. The two institutions are there to serve two functions. As for the chaining, some of what you said might be true (and some may not be so) if it is the practice is wrong, but there are many reasons for them to be chained...most commonly male elephants are chained when they are in heat (called must) for the protection of not only humans but other elephants as well as the elephant in question. I’m not blaming you @jhonny it’s just that most tourists from western countries do not understand/ are unaware of the facts and the context. Hence the many comments/ articles on travel blogs. If you want to get the facts on this...it is better to ask an expert. Hope to see some great videos from you as usual.

It is a fact that if the elephants who were with humans are released to the wild , a) the other wild elephants attack and try to kill them/get chased away wherever they try to settle down ( intruders in their territory, and smelling of humans) b) the released ones consider human habitats as their homes and try to come closer to the familiar human settlements - creating fear and desperation among village settlements. In efforts to protect their crops and eles may get harmed by humans. c) they are " orphaned" when they get cutoff from their birth pack , they have lost some of the natural instincts to survive in natural forests, besides finding it hard to get adjusted to new territory . What to do with the former wild animals held in captivity and their off springs is an unresolved issue faced by many countries ... there are no quick fixes or sure fixes . New issues will manifest regardless of which solution is implemented 😶 The wild life dept officials and the Vets have a good understanding of the behaviour of wild elephants and the big picture although they may be able to implement only patch work solutions .. you may be interested in Cp wild lanka yt channel

thats wrong, pinnawala started to take care of domesticated elephants, these animals can't be sent back to the wild... and these elephants need to be taken care of till they die and it is an expensive operation ...and people going to see them help in that cause.... without understanding the whole picture making such narrow judgements is not helping any one...this place not only helps the elephgants, it also educate people on conservations, otherwise these animals would have died under such bad conditions both in the wild and among humans,,,, in the west, if a horse is injured they just kill the animal, instead these people take care of them till they die, and same time it helps the local economy as well....as usual its easy to make judgements from out side without seeing the bigger picture.

@@rasabilly " its easy to make judgements from outside without seeing the bigger picture." yes its because he hasn't done any research in this! And as a person who knows "little" about those researches that going on how to release elephants born under captive conditions to the wild, I'm pretty sure he knows nothing about any of those things. Because releasing to wild is extremely difficult and dangerous for both.

@@rasabilly this may be true, but then why does pinnawala also not release new born Elephants into the wild once they are old enough. or neuter adult so they stop producing babies in captivity? They keep them there for show and profit. Pinnawala is like Seaworld for Elephants: www.seaworldofhurt.com/features/is-seaworld-bad-animal-abuse-cruelty-facts/

@@JohnnyFD Those babies are born among people and got used to getting fed by people, are you joking when you say why they are not released, do u think they would survive in the wild.... geeeze man, do some proper research
@rasabilly4 жыл бұрын
@@JohnnyFD It is a govt owned facility, its not run looking for profits, only thing it gains is the economy it creates in the surrounding area due to the tourism it attracts...same time it creates the necessary education among the locals without would have treated these animals as mere pests that destroy their cultivation and not something to protect ..... as i said, do not be a dimwit SJWs who should rubbish without understanding the underline conditions ..

I prefer the commentary in English not in Sinhalese as my Sinhalese is rusty. The least you can do is add subtitles. That's my opinion..

Mr. Jonny & Mrs. Christina, To be honest, I would like to thank you one side & the other side, I hate you what you trying to explore without knowing but based on some of fake / fraud information on the Internet instead searching the truth.. I personally don't like that you try to judging / negotiating as well as reporting the prices in certain places.. Compare to other countries, no hidden or cheating charges on entrance tickets..(I hope you have a wide knowledge regarding this issue) Hence, I think it is better to do what you really consider in Sri Lanka.. Culture / Attitude / Interests / Habits / Expects as well as ambitions are also different country to country.. You have travelled to other countries, so I don't think you have narrow mind.. Please stop that spotting "bull-shit" in the your video.. (If you are really wish-maker to SriLanka, You Can Be Better)

You seem to have stirred up a hornets nest with your latest vlog. If your comments about Pinnawela are accurate it's horrendous and hope the authorities will do something about it. The baby elephants were adorable.😻. Take care and be safe.🙏💞

You are so wrong to make such a assumprion Pinawella is a elephant orphaaage for ones that have lost their limbs or are orphans from the conflicts that took place in the country in the past. They are sometimes resrained for the publicand their own safety and control their movement on the road and on the river. They are treated very well and cared for as a family and not right to say they are like whales in a theme park You should not comment without research or checking your facts and apologise for sending wrong messages to other tourists
