Nice video and gotta love the ones that others have attempted to fix & failed and then towed in. Not only do you have to figure out the original problem but also all the problems they have created and what they tore apart and didn't put back together. This one wasn't too bad b/c at least they didn't deliver it with a box of parts in the trunk and wiring all opened up and then want you to give them the normal rate. Great diagnosis just take the biggest problem & hope during the fix that it fixes the little problems but that didn't happen with yours but at least it was only fuses. Keep the videos coming and your subscribers will keep increasing...good stuff!
@pinpointautomotiverepair15927 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate! Yeah I lucked out on this one in a way, just some mixed up things all over but nothing too difficult or serious. I have had some real doozies, especially when the customer says things like, "It started doing ________ so I rewired ________ and now ___________ happens when I __________". (I'm sure you imagination can fill the blanks in nicely.) ;)
@haywardsautomotive61567 жыл бұрын
HAHA Or I've worked on it and taken it to several shops, they think it was hit by lightning. It's not tore apart too bad and they tow it in and there's modules all over the floor, wire harnesses opened up, dash 1/2 tore apart along with the engine bay and then they ask for an estimate...true story. To this day I still don't know what caused the no start b/c after I put it all back together everything worked perfectly for years. I have no idea how they came to the conclusion it was hit by lightning but I suspect heavy drinking, snorting or both :D

Great thought process Joe in the step-by-step of doing the diagnostics on this car! You were right that someone was having a little fun playing around with this car having two fuses out and a blow 120A fuse. The 120A fuse may have went from vibration since it was a small crack across the link. No matter what caused it, the owner or someone left the car in a mess for sure. Nice work Joe and keep up the good work!
@pinpointautomotiverepair15927 жыл бұрын
I think you're absolutely right. I don't think my original suspicion of the fuse being blown was accurate, instead I believe vibration caused it. As for the other issues, welp, at least its all good now lol. Thanks for the compliments!

This is probably my favorite video yet. I like how you show the struggle we sometimes run into and the mistakeswe make as well. Top notch. Just curious how you billed for this one in terms of diagnostic time.
@pinpointautomotiverepair15927 жыл бұрын
I think we billed an hour diagnostic time, and an hour for the heavy fuse replacement. I felt that was more than fair.
@pinpointautomotiverepair15927 жыл бұрын
Remember that my procedure takes way longer on video. Though the video is 45 minutes long, me conducting this diagnosis minus replacing the heavy fuse probably would not have taken longer than 20 minutes or so.
@josueivanruiz7 жыл бұрын
The reason I ask is because the original complaint was a no start no crank. Once you get it to start and run, the other issues with the car would be seperate problems. I guess in this case because its just fuses either blown or missing, its a "easy" quick diagnosis and fix. I would imagine if those other problems weren't fuse issues, you would be calling the customer to get more diagnostic time on the car. Either way, im really impressed with the content of your videos, as well as the attitude and approach. Keep them coming!
@pinpointautomotiverepair15927 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, if the other problems were separate concerns more diagnostic time would have been warranted. The only one I feel wasn't was the throttle body fuse being blown, but given the compounding issues engineered into the vehicle I didn't see a point in going any further with it. We informed the customer that if it were to blow again we would need to perform diagnostics on that circuit. Sometimes you just have to sort of feel out a situation out and determine what seems right and fair for a given condition. I'm glad you are enjoying my channel!

No bad feelings towards you but glad to see other techs get these type of R.O.s too. You do know Toyota does this kind of designing on purpose so people can't work on their cars & simply give up. The odds of so many PITA designs from one brand are astronomical. It's on purpose. Then add some butch in the mix & here we go again. Any way good video & always bill labor accordingly.

Two blown fuses and a missing one? Humm! So what were they blown? I might give you the main blown by a reverse polarity but the throttle one no! Something else was there, do you check components when a fuse is blown? When you said that the main fuse was not the reason of the no crank, how did you figure? Cristal ball? Lol

Pretty funny indeed that some person played swap-tronics all over the board with the fuses. Good idea to start at the fuse box and see if anything and everything is in its correct place and the correct type and rating before you go and do some diag from that point. I work on a lot of pre Sept.1996 vehicles and yeah stuff gets moved around. Or from the person that just goes to the parts counter buys a box of the assorted value and puts in whatever will fit regardless of type, value, etc. or just leave it out altogether hoping said problem will just go away. It's 10 years old so yeah it'd have quite a story to tell. This the same one that had the alternator/battery light problem?
@pinpointautomotiverepair15927 жыл бұрын
Thankfully I don't see too many vehicles like this come around, we have taught many of our customers the importance of letting a professional take a look from the start, to avoid situations like this. Yep, this is the very same Scion from the alternator video! That being said, a previous viewer wanted more information on one of the circuits we tested on that video, and I just realized I had the perfect opportunity to get him an answer.... Crap.

@int531857 жыл бұрын
Your right. I have seen a reverse connection jump start and it ain't pretty. Toyota was smart and put that fuse in there to save the alternator.

Those aftermarket remote starts and alarms really play havoc with electrical systems. I once worked on a car that had a remote start installed...only it was a stick! Guess what happened when the car was left in park?! A do it yourself self driving car!
@andreasmaltcke1177 жыл бұрын
This 120A fuse was probably not burnt, in my opinion the original cause is mechanical damage. Bad design, high stress and vibration - the result is a crack that eventually "burns" at the current below the nominal. A fuse burnt by too much current has a distinctly large trace of arc / discharge. Fuses mounted in this way (screws / nuts) are relatively often damaged mechanically, without any cause on the electrical side. Poor design, too much plastic ;-P I see sometimes such fuse damage, especially on fuses mounted to the battery clamp (main fuses, high current). European style, often combined with a pyrotechnic switch.
@pinpointautomotiverepair15927 жыл бұрын
Good thought here! I think you are very likely correct. Keeping this in mind, I think the original problem with the vehicle was this 120A fuse, and all of the rest of these issues were simply engineered into it. Thanks for your input!
@andreasmaltcke1177 жыл бұрын
As you look at other Toyota fuse boxes, you will notice some difference with the main power cable connection. It is not hanging on the fuse, it is bolted to the box itself. I do not know whether in all models, but mostly it looks like. Scion is a low-cost brand, so it cuts costs exactly everywhere. Two cents here, two cents there (100,000 times a year or more) and we start talking about serious money. BTW Symptoms of this type of damage (cracking of the main fuse) may disappear for some time. For example, a cold engine does not start one day and the next day or after an hour everything works. Or almost everything (no battery charging, light disappearing, etc). (Google translate, sorry)
