It seems to be a common issue. This issue has been blamed on everything from static electricity shock to bad RCA grounds. I’ve always loved this deck and it’s still in use in my son’s car. Still sounds amazing.

I’m not sure I can help with that model. I would look at sending it to Pioneer for repair or to United Radio in Syracuse NY.

Hi Joe ... maybe you can shed some light on an issue I have. Mine is an old Pioneer DEH-P20 in my farm truck. Recently started cutting out the sound but radio was still powered. Kept getting worse until there's no sound at all. Today I took it out of the dash thinking I had a broken wire. I found that if I squeeze the case it will play. Also noticed that when I touch the case with the screwdriver I would get a sound through the speakers. I'm suspecting a broken ground somewhere but where? I did learn from your video how to get the top cover and CD player out to access the inside so thank you for that. Can you give me a suggestion? Carl

You’re on the right track but I would start by making sure your speaker wires aren’t shorted to ground. You can use a multimeter with the plug disconnected from the radio. Test continuity from each speaker wire to ground. What you’re describing sounds like a bad solder joint in the circuit board. Try (with the cover off) using a non-metallic probe like a wooden pencil or plastic pen to press on the circuit board in different places to see what happens. You may find that (being a farm truck) you have some minor moisture damage on the circuit board. Those are my best suggestions without seeing the radio in person.

@@JoesCarSmartsNY thanks Joe ... I will try the continuity test first and then move on to if needed. The guy that had the truck before me ... Well let's just say that it say for 7 years because they did a "tune-up" and couldn't get it started again. I bought it and put the plug wires in the correct firing order and it started. So I will definitely start there. I will let you know ... Carl

Mine will only play a CD for about a Minuit and then I get an error. Do you know what this issue might be. Thanks.

I would suspect a laser problem.
