I can't figure out why so many people talk trash about Pioneer. Their amps are CEA certified, their champion pro series and spl series subwoofers are legendary, components are crystal clear, and head units are the best in the business. Just because they don't jack up their prices and overcharge, doesn't mean it's not good stuff.

Pioneer's been a spoiler/annoyance to U.S. Audio concerns since they started (successfully) punching up to brands like McIntosh and Marantz in the '70's. Marantz sold out to Sony/Superscope (didn't hurt their products much until later in the '90's when the brand hit the skids, and then got bought by D&M) and the same fate has only recently befallen Pioneer. (I think Oinkyo owns the "Mass market" division now.) But from 1974-ish to about 1981 and then again from the late '80's (the "Elite Series") until after the turn of this Century, Pioneer (and its American derived engineering DNA, courtesy of people like Bob Carver and Bart Locanthi) was at the top of the marketplace in quality and conservative marketing. (Google an SX-1980 or SPEC series for the '70's. You'll get a hernia just picking one of the silly things up...) Where they fell from grace was from 1982 or so up until about 1990, and then again after the decade-long Japanese recession took hold after (again) the turn of this Century. Once again, their brand's bifurcated and the descendants of their original innovators now resides in what's left of their "Elite" brand and "TAD" lines. (You're likely never going to afford anything with a TAD nameplate on it, which is a mistake on their part, but there you have it.) So basically anything you see in Walmart with a Pioneer nameplate isn't really all that close to the original nameplate's legacy. What's been much more consistent (as BigDWiz points out) is their pre-eminence in the Car Stereo market. The real inflection point for their old school front ends was their FM Supertuner and Cassette deck technology. But as analog FM's content has lessened in quality, that advantage is (unnecessarily) fading. (FM broadcasters could go back to programming interesting Music if they really wanted to, but it would require "risk" which they're not prepared to take any more. Apparently.) The same thing happened to Fisher in the '70's. (Samyo bought 'em and gutted them.) There's information out there about the son of the CEO (sound familiar?) squandering the progress that the head of the company created during their heyday. They sold off their "Elite" video display technology/brand and have (at various times) marketed "Unobtanium" higher quality designs (Exclusive, Pure Malt, etc.) for their "home" markets. They're not automatically bad because they're ubiquitous. But they haven't guarded their brand as well as I might've hoped. I've been a Pioneer Loyalist since my first home stereo (1979) and my first car stereo (1984). But they've slid sideways any number of times. So everybody gets a piece of whatever "truth" there might be. I'd like to see what's been done with Marantz (there's been some pretty brutal hyperinflation of their pricing, but the quality is there in spades) applied to Pioneer's legacy. I'd drop coin for a two-channel SX-2020 (or SX-1980 Mk. II) with updated technology. Just as long as it wasn't "BPC'ed to death"...ymmv...

Nice, I bought this amp in 2016 when first released new, and I'm here in 2021 still rocking it. It's been in 4 different cars, first car I had it in paired with two pioneer Champion Series PRO 12", dual ported box tuned to 40hz, I won first place (beginner class) sound competition with that setup, 141.6 decibels. It's now just running one of those 12's in a ported box, great amp 6 years of hard use!👍👍👍

Yeah I actually installed the 800 watt version of this amp last week for a kid and he was bragging about his 1600 watt amp cause of the box. I had to explain to him that it was 800 watts rms and that the max numbers mean nothing at all.

That's right, we have to educate these folks! Probably the most impressive part about this amp to me is the internals. Looks like a lot of care was taken to assemble it. No glue on places were glue wasn't needed...no extra compound smeared in the wrong places. Looks solid to me!

Good amp. Used to run this on my 18" ultimax with no issues (gains set with the DD1). Only reason i ever swapped it out was for more power, switching to a rockford 1500. Bon Scott depends with what you want to hear. If your a fan of only low, then boosting the bass will be unnecessary because this amp has alot to offer. Those rail caps really make it go very low without taking alot of juice and strain.

Subscribed. Really digging the old school theme of the channel. I've always had an affinity for old school tech, first set up was a used crunch drive series ds-2400vu 800x2 and a set of cerwin vega hed 12's around 2002 in high school. I remember wanting to find a set of matching drive series fat boy subs to go with that amp so bad! Current set up is a Rockford Fosgate punch hx2 RFD1210, on a 07 era Rockford p300-1. Sub is crying for more power, lol. Never owned anything nice enough to write home about, nothing like you find at least. I do have a Rockford power 1000.1bd from late 90's/early 2000's in storage that quit working several years back, your channel has got me wanting to dig it out and trouble shoot it. Guy had it on Craigslist in perfect shape, end caps and all for $40... That amp pushed two 15's for a few years, then one day it wouldn't turn on and it went into storage and was replaced by a Lanzar Optidrive 2000.1d... Not a fan of the newer Lanzar products, but the older opti line was pretty good.

I love seeing the old school Phoenix Gold amps. I never could afford the big ones, only one I could afford back in the day was a m25 but it still kicked but.

I had an 8601 a while back, bullet proof amp. very clean power, and extremely affordable.

bullet proof is important these days. Too many throw-away models out there

I would love to see you test a Rockford Fosgate T20001BD Amplifier, I've had one for years and it's never let me down! Also have another Rockford Fosgate T5002BD and a Soundstream tarantula TRX 4.880 that I'd like to see you test! Love your channel, love my old school stereos!!!

hey bud so this amp only lasted 6 months at 1ohm didn't have any issues at all and out of the blue i smelled something burning and sure enough it was the amp I loved it and still debating if I should get it again or go with something different loved the price and the performance of it but now I'm scared to waste more money on it

I owned the first removable face plate car stereo..I remember it like yesterday...I was most defiantly the FIRST! DEH880 comes to mind but this was MANY years ago.

Great review / test. Very helpful, as this is about the highest capacity amp you can use without making major upgrades to a modern vehicles electrical system (at 2 or 4 ohms).

I remember in 1993 CD decks with removable face plates were upwards of $1,500. That's a hell of alot of money today.
