Morning test flight and out looking for Big Horn Sheep in 1946 J3 Piper Cub. C-85 engine.
GoPro Hero2 camera. (Sorry about the iPad in the way).
The iPad is mounted with a "RAM" Mount which has a combination lock. iPad is used for navigation by using current VFR charts on "ForeFlight" app., which has all airport diagrams, notams, weather, charts, frequencies, GPS, taxi charts . Also there is a "SPOT" GPS - mounted with a RAM mount for tracking me and emergency location in addition to a standard ELT. On top of the dash is a "P-CAS" Zion traffic Passive type TCAS to detect aircraft traffic with distance/altitude from me.

This was fun to watch. My dad bought one of these and took the family up, one at a time, flying around Ft. Wayne, Indiana from Smith Field. I was never so scared - sitting in the front seat with no windows or sides!! Dad was fearless.

It was 1960, and I was 9 years old when at a local fair I got to go for a ride in the back seat of a J3 cub. The flight only lasted 15 or at most 20 minutes, but the thrill has lasted a life time. About 25 years later on I obtained my private license with training on a PA-140. Three years later my commercial rating, and shortly co-ownership on a PA-160. All thanks to Taylor and Piper. I really enjoyed your video and love the plane. Thanks so much for sharing!

T hank you Steven for posting such a beautiful video. This reminds me of my youth fresh out of high school when I would go flying out over the King Ranch with my uncle and his J-3 cub. We would go deer spotting and it was a time in my life that I will never forget. Keep the videos coming!

Nice video. I just bought a 46 J3C-85 in February. It looks new, and has 400 SMOH, wings were recovered in 2009. Love it , great airplane. I got my private in 1971, and rented 172's etc, until my son bought a Grumman AA1A in 2000. flew it until he sold it in 2010. So I finally bought an airplane myself, and the best part is I can fly it under Light Sport rules, got tired of waiting for FAA to get rid of the 3rd class physical rule.

This is one of those picture-perfect experiences for which I might have to envy you for the rest of my life. You are incredibly fortunate (though I'm sure you've earned it) to have this kind of life and the possibility to fly in this combination (amazing aircraft in amazing scenery). However you put it, it just does not get much better than that.

The 3G or 4G AND LTE drop off above about 3,000 feet. The "Cell" towers get the same signal strength to multiple sites and the service can not switch you from one to the other , and it drops off.

I know it seems dumb but that is the perfect example of how to hand prop. Too many of us including myself are guilty of trusting the mag switch. If anyone hasn't hand propped before... no matter if the switch is on or off treat it as if it's hot, all it takes is a short circut, or accidently having it on one mag and thinking you have it to off and you will be out an airplane (happened this year to a friend) or will get 3 prop strikes (happened to a different friend while priming)

Fantastic POV perspective of the Cub. I'm looking for places in the Houston area to get my tailwheel training sometime this year, myself. I have to be honest though, the IPAD and the other whiz-bang stuff on a Cub really kinda bother me. I'm young, from the 'video game generation', but I still don't think those things are necessary unless you're flying into Class B all the time. And a Cub in IMC? I dunno.... Anyway, not to take away from the gorgeous flying day you had here. Keep'em Flyin!

Sweet once again! What all do you do with the iPad in the Cub? We use them now in our cockpits with Jeppview, etc. Also saw some kind of gizmo with 4 digits above the iPad, and a TCAS looking gizmo on the glare shield. Nice iPhone too. The quality on that Gopro is just amazing! Please don't forget your Gopro on every flight. :-)

Speaking of VHF antennas. Back when, I built one for my Exp. Amateur Built Plane that cost me around 10 bucks, I think. (sorry :-) It was an "Inverted V Di-pole with a Pawsey Stub". Found it on the web. Had a friend "read my xmission" who was around 40 miles away in his 3/4th scale Mustang! Couldn't believe it - I was at around 2,000 feet. Didn't need a ground plane or counterpoise with this ant. Took my plane out of action at 13 yrs. & 840 hrs of time. Others on the web just as good.

They can be had for $29,000 , but one must look at the full story. If it's getting close to new fabric time, then that can run $25,000+. Damage history, engine, brakes, prop and engine size etc all play a part in the cost. A real nice one would be more like $45,000. Mine is a standard 1946 certified, not a "spin-off" new experimental, which could exceed $125,000!

Maybe a stupid question, but why do you fly from the rear seat?
@Koumrian
@Koumrian 11 жыл бұрын
Weight and balance. When flying solo, you sit in the back seat because if you sat in the front, there'd be too much weight toward the front, making it unbalanced and unsafe to fly. With a passenger in the rear seat, it is within its safe limits.
@MrGopherhead
@MrGopherhead 12 жыл бұрын
Not to be overly critical of your comment, but you have it wrong. A short circuit by definition is a direct path to ground. Each magneto is turned "off" by "shorting" the mag's primary coil to ground. That is the function of your p lead. It is when you have an "open" circuit when the magnet in your magneto's induces a current into your mag's primary coil and will result in a spark at your plugs. You are controling this with your mag switch. When it is NOT shorted is when you have a problem
