Such a moving and sad song, and so well written and performed. It tears in my heart everytime I listen to it... Someone said once, this should have been Scotland's national anthem..

Je suis originaire de la région où l'oncle de Mark Knopfler a combattu. Je découvre la raison de cette chanson, même si je suis un fan de Mark depuis 1979. J'ai toute sa discographie, enfin tout ce qui a été commercialisé. J'aurai l'occasion d'aller à Ficheux, essayer de trouver son oncle Freddie Laidler s'il est là-bas. Je connais très bien le lieu d'où sont extraites la vidéo du clip. Je tiens à remercier tous ces combattants qui sont venus pour notre liberté, même si nous la perdons actuellement. Il y a beaucoup de cimetières militaires dans ma region, il y en a un à 30 mètres de chez moi, j'y vais aussi souvent que j'en ressens le besoin.Merci à tous ces héros ❤

Mark Knopfler wrote this song as a tribute to his uncle, Freddie Laidler who was his mother’s brother. Freddie Laidler was a piper with the Tyneside division of the Blackwatch Regiment. He died I action in the north of France in 1940. He was just 20 years old.

He died at the battle for st valery my uncle James Matthew was captured during that battle he was with the blackwatch royal regiment of Scotland the 51st highland division were killed or captured at that battle on the 10 of June 1940 when my uncle came home after nearly 6 years a POW he returned to the railway and became an locomotive driver 1974 I became his fireman we spent many hours talking about his time as a POW as I had lost my father in 1968 he had also fought during WW2 in the RAF MY FATHER spent nearly a year looking for his brother all over Germany unfortunately he was in a camp in Poland in Posnan on the Czech border

I AM NOT A PIPER, BUT I HAVE COME TO LOVE THE PIPES THROUGH A VERY SPECIAL MARINE IN MY LIFE THAT IS A PIPER AND WILL BE TO THE END. I in my humble opinion believe Mark is the best song writer . When you bring into it his music redition . You have a combination of feelings that affect your very soul.

I like the little insect at 1:03 passing at the bottom right, what a nice detail! The shots are breathtaking again! You've outdone yourself on this one! Colouring, switches between the shots, and lyrics in description! So awesome!
