Mate you just gave your friend's number to the whole internet 😶 Anyhow, from an objective position of practicality, what you have there is absolutely ridiculous that anyone would bother to build such a thing. Of course, it's also frikkin awesome. And you did it because you could. I love this. It's brill.

Modify the Pi a bit like remove the Composite, on board audio, ethernet, and have one usb port, and use the micro usb-a port as a charging port, and remove the gpio port to further compact it but not to much where there is no airflow to keep it cool, make the screen internal for the pi, make the GSM module internal for the pi, and then add a internal memory flash for a raspberrypi GSM operating system and there you go, you have a raspberrypi phone nice a compact, now you'll just have to get a custom case made that has a detachable back for the battery

could you reduce the thickness by removing the composite video out, ethernet, and usb ports and instead have a usb wifi module soldered directly to the board?
@homomculus
@homomculus 9 жыл бұрын
If you were building your own board, or comfortable with hacking a Pi, that should be very possible. As is, he's using something which already comes with those, so for prototyping it'd be a hassle to remove all the extra stuff (although it'd be cool-but-unnecessary to have a phone with all those ports too :p)

integrate a decent mic/speaker, add a camera, and boot android on it and 3d print a housing, it would be nice considering you could fix it yourself instead of worrying about some stupid warranty

John Bowen I guess this is just in the prototype stages. There definitely is a lot of possibility for this. And yea I was thinking the same thing, if some of those ports where removed it could become quite thin.

I'm pretty sure the pi zero would be a better board to do this with. It would at the very least allow for much more space. There is a android build for raspberry pi, and it does work with the pi zero w which would allow for so much more capablities. The one issue is the pi zero w would actually need to be overclocked, which is easy to actually do without causing too much of a temp issue, the issue is when you slap a screen on it would. I have done this to run my 2 doom servers, which 1 of them eats up more resources then my quake, assault cube server, mumble, irc, mysql, and apache combined. Also I recommend not using apache with the pi zero, there are more light weight options.

Now that there are kits out there that can give you a touch screen via HDMI, have you considered updating this? I thought about doing this a while back when i first stumbled onto your project, but noticed that the screen as a primary display device wasn't very practical. Now that it is, it would be interesting to see if a practical smartphone would be possible with pi, which would give us our classic desktop environment, and if we lugged a pocket sized wireless usb keyboard along, we could have a simple netbook replacement computer that doubles as a phone. We could develop and debug apps on the machine as we test them, and this could all be done with completely free software (and thus we also have access to countless existing free softwares), and giving us better control over apps for security (which seems to be a problem for the android and iphone phones right now where a flashlight app gives away GPS locations). Mix it with "data plan controls" and you could make it so only phone calls and texts use the tower, and the rest relies on wifi (also possibly through nub) so that data usage can be turned on and off to control phone bills better. What do you think?

It would be nice if the PiPhone could do a little more than what other telephones could do. Like giving the exact location of the call, the duration and the names of the used masts of the telephone operator. Then the Raspberry could record all conversations, or make the call himself, with prerecorded messages and filled in information.

Does somebody try this with the Pi Zero? If this gets smaller and smaller, the DIY-phone would be fully available if cases for that are printed...
