Piping Up! Organ Concerts at Temple Square | September 6, 2023 (Brian Mathias)
“Pasticcio” - Jean Langlais (1907-91)
“Come, Come, Ye Saints” - arr. Brian Mathias
“Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen,” S.673 - J. S. Bach, arr. Franz Liszt (1811-86)
Legendary French organist/composer Jean Langlais wrote his charming “Pasticcio,” published in 1956, as part of a wedding gift to Jacqueline Marchal, the daughter of his organ teacher, André Marchal. In this work, Langlais (who was blind) used Braille notation to encode the names of Jacqueline and her fiancé, Giuseppe Englert, directly into the music itself, deepening the homage to a dear friend.
“Come, Come, Ye Saints”-a beloved Latter-day Saint hymn-has been performed at the daily organ concerts on Temple Square for well over a century. Each organists plays their own arrangement of this stirring hymn.
Franz Liszt’s devotion to the music of J. S. Bach permeated much of his career’s work. Here, Liszt reworks a motif from Bach’s cantata “Weiner, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen” (BWV 12) as a set of variations, originally written for piano in 1862. This grieving work was profoundly influenced by the sudden death of Liszt’s eldest daughter, Blandine, earlier that same year. Liszt himself wrote the organ transcription soon after publication of the solo piano version.

Wonderful! The Liszt is magnificent. It's my favorite of Liszt's three major organ works, and Brian Mathias plays it to perfection. As usual, the Tabernacle organ seems ideally suited to the repertoire....what can't it play with convincing excellence? Thanks.
