There are legitimate reasons that self-diagnosis can be valid for some people. A diagnosis from a medical professional should always be the end goal and self-diagnosis is no substitute for that. But sometimes it can be hard to get diagnosed with certain disabilities. For example, it’s very common that parents won’t want to listen to their children or even take them to a professional in search of a diagnosis. Not to mention the immense financial barriers there can be to doing so; jumping through different doctors and appointments isn’t cheap. In general, I agree that plenty of people who self-diagnose are cringe and doing it for attention. But there are also a ton who are completely valid.

Tiny social interactions with random people that I’ve never met in my life make my heart beat like I’m on a treadmill, and this creates a self-fulfilling prophecy in which my inability to comfortably interact with people makes me less comfortable with socialization. Even now, it’s taken me like 10+ minutes just to write this comment because I get worked up about whether I’m over-sharing or under-sharing or speaking with proper grammar and such. It really annoys me when people take these issues that really impede on my ability to live a normal life and treat them like silly little quirk that you show to your followers for internet points. It really trivializes the struggle of people with real mental disorders, and creates a ‘Boy Who Cried Wolf’ mentality among people who aren’t really invested in other people’s mental health. In the coming years, nobody is going to take an ADHD or Anxiety diagnosis seriously because of TikTokers who think they know better than trained psychiatrists, and that is incredibly concerning.

I was raised the traditional Asian way of getting spanked whenever I sought after too much unnecessary attention for the sake of it, which I honestly rarely did after one or two times experiencing a spanking. I was relatively behaved growing up... much to the surprise of my relatives who didn't believe in that kind of disciplinary methods with their unruly kids. I'm not saying it'll work on kids with actual disorders, but what I am saying is that discipline does fricking work on kids faking disorders or acting annoying for the sake of being "accepted". So glad I never ended up like 'em. I ain't perfect just like my parents, but I sure am glad to have been raised that way in spite of my folks flaws on a lot of other things. I'm just saddened whenever I see people out there thinking being a disciplinarian is automatically a bad thing. It's necessary to an extent.

I had tourettes so I can relate, but I was taken for diagnosis at age 9, and was forced to take a handful of extremely expensive medications with loads of side affects for nearly 10 years. Fortunately I had motorticks rather than vocal, but I can totally relate to the mental stress of trying to hold back in public, and when at home preferring the freedom of not having to care. I ended up injuring myself a few times with specific ticks; it's not "fun". I also get where the younger sibling is coming from, I'm sure I annoyed mine plenty, but to be honest that's just part of being a kid and has nothing to do with disorders IMO. I could also sympathize with the parents, since the specialists who diagnose, and the medications, are hella expensive.

Even here in germany where you don't have to pay anything to see a doctor it is hard to get diagnosed because you need to talk to a psychiatrist for that and since they are specialists and therefor there aren't as many it can take up to a year to get a first appointment. And as someone who is diagnosed with depression (my therapist thinks i might have some other things too) it annoys me when people claim that they have something that they don't have.

When I was young, I wondered if I have ADHD. I told my mom, a doctor. She says maybe. Probably. Then she taught me how to cope. And I learned. And it feels great beating your fucking genes. Maybe I still have some weird behavior, but it doesn't affect other people and is self contained. We humans are better than animals for a reason, and if the disease is severe we have meds.

I hate the term "neurodivergent" because of people like this. I bet there are just as many people, if not more, that are faking having a neurodivergent disorder, as those that actually have one.

Self-diagnosis can be a helpful thing if you actually really dive into the subject, read some papers on it and take a few tests that are officially used in getting the diagnosis. It might be a slight problem that people take self-diagnosing too lightly without going to a doctor to check it, but it's a way more harmful when people dismiss the self-diagnosis as just a "trend".
@joaogarcia6170 Жыл бұрын
One thing is to accept people who have disorders and have them figure out how to deal with it, another is celebrating them for having it, or using them to justify unacceptable behavior. This is not just in the psychological realm, it seems we've done a complete 180 on virtues, we are praising weakness and impotence, putting it higher than Strength and Potency, we are doomed to downfall at this rate.

The first one sounds like conversion disorder or OCD. I got a similar issue after I had been through Trauma. It was a reaction to intrusive and painful thoughts. Conversion disorder is when some emotional problem becomes translated into some physical or neurological disorder. Maybe she's gone through or is going through something that is traumatic and that she can't talk about...

If you consciously make the assessment and factual statement that you NEED to make these sounds to feel better, then you are not afflicted with anything. You are just insufferable at that point. People with actual autism most of the time do not know how to control it nor will they tell you outright that it is to feel better. They do not know. To consciously make such an assessment would be like breaking the 4th wall of mental illness. Reminds me of that scene from Duckman when Cornfed came to visit Duckman at his house and he made a legal disclaimer referencing his mandatory screentime.

Also self diagnosing isnt even this. Its something else Making weird noises and saying weird phrases for adhd/autism is more of an echolalia thing (repeating a thing in same tone, accent, musical progression, etc) than tics or whatever for tourettes. And stimming and tics are also different things. One of the most common one is bouncing your leg constantly (sorta fun 7/10). Twirling hair is another (sorta uncomfy. For me 3.5/10)

When my brother was like 10-16 he used to act like that. He would make weird noises and act like a freakish spaz. I told him that he was acting like this kid at school that everyone felt bad for and avoided because he would talk to himself and make animal noises in the middle of class and was a freakishly zealous Nintendo stan. I started calling him that kids name when he would have freakish outbursts. Thank god he outgrew that. He's cool now and we get along fine.
