Bro they aren’t “up against” anything. It’s a literally a meal delivered to them. If the bass with established in the tank, then you could maybe make that argument. You cannot just throw an animal into a strange environment and expect it to defend itself

Incredible how the juveniles went to town in a flurry once they got started on the tail. The feeding frenzy was pretty intense and left that bass with half his spine sticking out in a hurry. The adults finishing the rest of the bass off was likewise incredible to watch as they dove right in and took huge chunks out of him.

The bass by itself was already in shock/struggling when dropped into the water (different water parameters/temperature). If the piranha didn't get him the shock/stress would have done him in anyway. In the wild most of the larger fish in the same body of waters as the piranhas will take a nip of the tail here and there, but they can never be taken down in the open water as they are not confined as in your tanks. Question for you Bearski. What type of filtration do you use in your piranhas tanks? With all that meat floating around after they attack it has got to clog your filters:).
@Bearskimethod2 жыл бұрын
First things first: definitely sound like a self proclaimed expert and I only assume giving that the bass came from water temp almost identical, it was summer and my tanks are at 71F, your temp shock theory is nullified, next piranha in the wild; fin nipping as you referred to them is only part of the juvenile stage, as they grow so does their prey, often several times bigger then any individual members of the pack. And to better illustrate just how very “confined” your mind set is,. imagine that, most sick and the weak or unfortunate, become a meal on daily basis out in the wild, where the outcome is always 50/50. I just did the part where the pack gets presented with such opportunity.. 2 Sun Sun 704b canisters, cleaned once a year. ✌🏻
@cobramanphil2 жыл бұрын
@@Bearskimethod Bearski...why the hate? I don't proclaim to be an expert, but I have been keeping salt/fresh tanks for about 20 years..mostly fish only tanks. I am just saying shock from different waters is a real thing. It is not just temperature. It is also PH, ammonia, or any difference you have in your tank and the waters where the bass came from. There can be an adverse reaction simply from the bucket of water where the bass was to any of your tanks. Even the netting/handling of the fish into your piranha tank can affect the behavior of of the bass when it is first introduced into the tank (regardless if the piranhas are there or not). I really think your piranha tanks are cool, but it is far from a natural setting where piranhas naturally hunt prey (unless you are not saying that?). Keep up the good work...those piranha tanks are nice.

The bass was not going to eat anything. It was traumatized from capture. All it wanted was to escape, but it couldn't in the aquarium. Uninjured, it could possibly have out swum, even the adults, in natural habitat. Interesting but a little pitiful. Nature can sure be cruel.

@@Bearskimethod What is not logical. What is your logic. My logic is the bass is probably a faster, more straight line swimmer, than the short coupled, but probably, quicker on the turns, piranha. As far as trauma from capture, have you ever tried to catch a fish with hook, bait and line, after catching it and putting it in a live well, or bucket of water, just to see what it would do? Besides, it's my emotion, and nobody else's.
