Most people forget the study the things they love so dearly from a far, for example, the "pirate ship" look is often the richly embellished period of 1610-1730, specifically 1610-1710, when ship designs like Galleons, Caracks, and the newly designed Man 'O War were heads of the seas. This was the era with the most intense embellishments, baroque esk design, and sharp front and aft castles that were tall and imposing, meant for naval combat and a higher ground that cannons couldn't reach. Ships from the 1520-1540 time period were especially tall, sometimes 5 decks high back-above the main middle deck. This period introduced the fad of bowsprit grilles aka the Spritail. It's a long jutting sword like cage that supported the bowsprit (the front ship mast that sits diagonal or almost vertical on the fronts of ships if it's a reveered man o war that has to hold up a huge amount of mast). Often times, ships of this era make Pirates of the Caribbean ships look... SOMEHOW, bad! They are really beautiful, rich wood color, tons of accent paint especially in the 1500s (by the way, in the tudor era, many of the kings/queens royal fleet was painted all black or all red, it was an incredible sight), gold embellishments galore, intense unique designs, glory to the wood carving designs that adorned the hull beautifully. The warships and ship of the lines were amongst the most beautiful ship design to date, sorely understudied though so the topic is never brought to attention. The Swedish Wasa (vasa) warship may, by name, sound less intimidating and grand, but just take a look at what a grand wooden vessel it is. The Henry Grace Dieu is another striking ship, that being of the kings built in 1507 (I'm pretty sure?) with red, green, blue, and orange paint embellishments at the aft and front castle. I think the best part of this era is that there WERE charred black painted ships, that in the event of a crash, deemed them ghostships, (there's tons of stories of wandering ships on the ocean too, no one on the decks) with a washed sunbleached gray color because of the black paint and black sails such as with the flying Dutchmans color pallete but different of course. Ah, but the Flying Dutchman in comparison to the Black pearl is another fantastic fact. The black pearl is approximately a 1660s british galleon design, whereas the Flying Dutchman is closer to a 1610s Dutch war ship. Something like the Queens Annes Revenge is a curious case...and I'd say it has elements of a fake design, but leans more into the 1650s, with a tall aftcastle and sun faded design.
