S. Clay Wilson is one of the baddest and boldest of the legendary underground cartoonists from San Francisco. His life story and a retrospective of his artistic career are now available in The Mythology of S. Clay Wilson, from Fantagraphics Books. Volume One Pirates in the Heartland was released in Summer 2014 and two more volumes will follow in 2015. Written and compiled by Patrick Rosenkranz.

Terrific video! I love hearing Wilson's voice here, as I forget what he used to sound like on an average day since his TBI in 2006. Being with him 24 hours a day, I've become accustomed to the soft spoken version of that formerly boisterous motor mouth. Patrick has done a masterful job with his biography of this complex man, lifting the veil to reveal a sensitive human being beneath Wilson's profoundly profane persona. Please look at sclaywilson.com to read what happened to him, and how he is doing now. And buy this book. It's well researched, well written, and filled with hilarious, outlandish, outrageous and loving interviews with friends, girlfriends, scholars, fellow workers, and a variety of fiendish compadres who littered the landscape along the way. A work of art about a truly great artist.

Lives right around the corner. Actually lived next to S.Clay and Lorraine on 16h for my first year, now around the corner on Dolores. My friend Colette with some help from Mark did that 3-D mural in red (Aztec/Mexican Goddess) that he's standing in front of. My favorite element in Clay's work is the way he draws shoes. Blouses stretched across breasts is another thing he does better than anyone.

The world isn't the same without Wilson and my dearest friend of 45 years, Dave Geiser. See you both again someday in the distant future at that bar in the great beyond.

Fabulous video! I was lucky enough to attend the Last Lunch Zap #13 party in Los Angeles and smart enough to purchase an original Wilson that night. Amazing after party at Timothy Leary's house but that's a whole other story : )

Typo alert: Wilson suffered a massive brain injury Nov 1, 2008. Not 2006. He is frail these days, and can no longer talk except for a couple of words. But he loves to see his old friends, and we can still manage to get a laugh out of him once in awhile. Please look at him on Facebook as well as sclaywilson.com to see how he is doing. Thanks to all who donate to his Special Needs Trust. We couldn't make it without your generosity.

Wilson may have been "one of the baddest" but don't be fooled, he had the heart of a big teddy bear.
