Kidnapping in Nigeria and Somalia is big business. But are they just taking back what is rightfully theirs?
The kidnappers see themselves as Robin Hood figures, targeting the hated oil companies who they accuse of plundering the country’s natural resources without giving anything back. They attack drilling platforms on powerful speedboats, abducting foreign nationals to later exchange for ransoms. Last year, there were 73 of these attacks, resulting in 62 abductions.
For several months, we tracked the soldiers, sailors and pirates, accompanying them on raids to reveal how they operate.
This documentary was produced by Magneto and directed by Bertrand Monnet . It was first released in 2016.

The question should be "how are all these super rich companies running a business so successful in such a poor country and everyone is so quite about it?" The reporter talks about corruption in his class but yet he has seen and experienced the state of the Nigerian people but yet says nothing about them except how "PIRATES" are ruining all those companies operations and capital. I guess Africa has nothing but oil, not even people "from where you standing"

Yeah! You are partly correct that the researcher emphasized on PIRACY, but not on corruption. But, do not forget that, in this research, he was only decided to carry out studies on why the PIRATES have chosen to embark on such activities and why & how they have been successful without being seriously dealt with, despite security on ground. The aim of the research was not to study corruption in oil theft and governance.

I agree with them, give them training and jobs. 27:11 the security on one rig is 1million per month. I’m sure they could put that money into the local community’s and pay for food, schooling, and Medical care. The key point schooling, teach and train the locals to do these jobs. Pay them the same rate an ex pat would get. The locals will then focus more on getting a job on a rig and not risking there life’s and taking life’s on the rig

@@spaceman69 fair question. I think dating back to colonialism the foreign powers still have profiting contracts with the local corrupt governments. Most of the profits go to these huge companies and little goes to the government of the country, which should be the legitimate owner of the resource. It's like having a gold mine in your private backyard, and for whatever reasons your neighbour does the digging and selling and you only get a small rent for the excavations. Of course there are many details and it's probably more complicated than that but think about it, every big company will want to find as many ways to exploit a resource for maximum profit, it's a basic buisiness principle, however the question is why should these foreign companies have so much power on a smaller country which doesnt have the political or economical.influence to reverse this?

You can't blame these people for violence. They are expoited for billions and left to rot in pollution and poverty. They are doing what ANY person would do. They have found their niche and only way to make money to support their families. It is the oil companies who commit piracy against the country of Nigeria!

I don't blame them. It's their land, their country, and they get nothing from the resources that other countries steal. That would never be allowed in the United States, and it shouldn't be allowed there either, just because they don't have the government to deal with it.

I wonder if Disney will make a movie series "Pirates of Nigeria"? Maybe Denzel Washington can play the GOOD "bad" guy pirate. When Europeans were pirates, they were even able to secure Government contracts and wound up in Hollywood. Seems to be a double standard.

France colonized many undeveloped 3rd world tribal lands many years ago especially in and around Africa, forming the "French Colonial Empire", and around early to mid 20th century they allowed the tribal lands to have independence and form their own country and government, in exchange for rights over all their natural resources, forming what is known today as "Neocolonialism". Because these undeveloped countries like Somalia and Nigeria don't have any control over their natural resources, their government can't profit enough to develop the country into a sustainable, efficient, and working economy, so technically these countries are still stuck in a "tribal phase" because of the French leeching everything off of their lands like a bloodsucking mosquitos. The only reason the French are constantly harassed by pirates is because the oil industry would rather spend just 1 million per month for security measures than invest several ten-millions per month for the locals to have basic human needs like clean water, food and medical care. the reason why Nigerian and Somalian military don't do anything about the pirates is NOT because of "corruption/bribery", but because these pirates do what they do as the only measure of feeding their families and children. Killing the pirates means most civilians will die from starvation. And these d*ckhead Frenchman have the audacity to call these countries "corrupted". All of these problems exist because France has a huge power-trip and greed problem. Not to mention all the other industries they're running in foreign countries: gold, other metals, diamonds, other gems, coal, forest woods.
