Are they going change the song too? "We pillage, we plunder, we rifle & loot" Can people just stop being so sensitive? Yes, as a woman it does suck to see discrimination and demeaning. But this is NOT a bad thing, it's historically accurate and I (and my other female friends) have NEVER had a problem with it. Today's society has gone too far and is ruining this for everyone.

Anita Cudiamat, yeah Disney is all about historical accuracy. we should probably start teaching little girls about how princesses were really trade fodder for creating alliances between Kingdoms because it was hoped they would create a child that contained the blood lines of both Kingdoms, they weren't even considered human. in facy, we should also teach girls that at the time they questioned whether or not women had souls or were even people. At the time, the only way women earned any personal freedom was becoming criminals against a morally corrupted governmental and social system. Too often women were stuck being property that cpuld, indeed, be bought and sold just as depicted in the ride. The worst part is WOMEN AND CHILDREN ARE STILL BOUGHT AND SOLD FOR SEX TODAY. I think it is a phenomenal message turning Scarlett into a pirate, taking her life into her own hands rather than being a sexual object. A MUCH better message to kids and a lot more fun for the rest of us. Oh, and a good number of pirates were women. in fact, many of the most successful pirates were women. Win for historical accuracy, right?

Princezz Puffypants so a little known fact that all the SJW people keep forgetting here, PIRATES ARE NOT THE HEROS. The whole is to point out the horrible things they did. Also, another important fact here, is that there is no way to change Pirates to be completely PC. There's guns, implied violence, alcohol abuse and so much more. All of which continue TO.THIS.DAY. So if you all think that this ride is even influential to kids (which it isn't, especially now with a stronger Star Wars and Marvel presence in the parks) your wrong. Pieces of Eight (the pirates gift shop) is one of the most dead gift shops in the parks. I went to the parks as a child and NEVER asked about what was happening in that scene. Kids don't really care about that because they're either too scared to get on the ride or so excited they don't really notice what's going on. This change is for the adults that can't handle it, not the sake of children.

There is a much deeper story line going through POTC that very few people get. When you are down in the caves seeing the skeletons, that is the modern times, when they are all dead and gone, then we go back into the past to see how it all happened. That being said, in the caves at the beginning, there is a painting above the bar of a red-headed female pirate surrounded by food and treasure. That IS our redhead from the auction scene. The story line goes that after being sold off to the pirates, she in turn starts a mutiny and takes over as the captain, and becomes a wealthy pirate of the seven seas. This is the ultimate female empowerment story of going from a sold off "commodity" to rich and powerful. Imagineer Marc Davis also had original concept art showing famous female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read admiring their treasure. So if all these "social justice" people are complaining about how women are portrayed (IN THE PAST THAT WAS REAL), they need to do their research first and find out the story, behind the story. The redhead comes out with the upper hand in the end.

I think something that would be fun is if they kept the "we wants the redhead scene" then added an additional scene of the redhead lady later tying them up or something to sell them, or getting comeuppance of some kind, to keep the historic scene, and acknowledge the historical reality, but still have the neat addition of a Lady Pirate!

I don't hear people complaining about the bride in the haunted mansion. She was changed from a "victim" to a "black widow"....So its ok to kill men but not ok to be killed by them?.......doesnt make any sense. As a kid I just took it as she died on her wedding day, not that she was "murdered by a man." It had weight because I felt she would always be in the attic looking for her lost love. The beating heart was the best part of the ride. Now its gone because of B.S. P.C. The same thing is happening to pirates......horse shit.

This is so upsetting and annoying. It's a classic moment in one of the best attractions ever made. Everyone who goes on the ride understand the context and understand Disney is not condoning auctioning people. I hate being pandered to and that's what this is. So disappointed that Disney doesn't give its guests credit for understanding the context of the ride. About two months ago Disney sent me a survey about Pirates of the Caribbean and the animatronics in the ride. I thought they were thinking about putting more of the movies in the ride. If I had known I would have stood up for the red head!

I'm on the fence about this. While it is interesting to see the redhead in a different role, it is basically rewriting history. Yes, there were some female pirates but it was more common to see a bride auction over a gun-wielding woman back then. The ride was based on the history of what a pirate did not how most people wish pirates were back then. It's okay to be PC every once in a while but to change something so iconic because it was controversial even though it was closer to the truth than this new scene might be doing too much. Don't get me wrong, I love Disney and will continue to love Disney, it is just a bit disappointing to see them try to be PC about everything is kind of heartbreaking. Walt would be shocked about this.

Princezz Puffypants When you put it into that perspective, it does change things a bit. I mean, there are still going to be people who will not see it that way and will be upset about the change. However, looking at the bigger picture, which is the role of women and children in today's society facing the horrors of sex trafficking and being kidnapped in general, you are correct when you say it is a powerful message. Yes, hearing about the change is still heartbreaking.

I mean sex trafficking is kind of a big thing happening right now. In my town particularly, people are constantly being taken and busted for sex trafficking so it's not a thing to be taken lightly, especially in a family park, ya know? They're keeping the character in (and making her cooler in my opinion) because they don't want to lose it completely, but they are taking that step to stop showcasing that scene. Yes it happened it that time and is a factual occurrence, but so was a lot of other bad things that they knew should not be included in a ride for families. Sex trafficking was not as big in the media spotlight back then so that seem didn't feel like it hit home to as many people, but now as I gets worse, it can really be a problem for some. So I'm sad for that iconic line to go, but she is staying, is gonna be a pirate now too, and are making a good new scene in its place.

What about all the armed robbery and alcoholism? Are they going to get rid of that too? I really don't think little girls get offended by this scene, or that it convinces boys to go into the human trafficking business! I know that's not what i was thinking about! I just saw it as a fun adventure.

I worked Pirates for almost two years. I loved working it so much. I have totally mixed feelings about this change. Part of me loves the classic auction scene and would hope it would never change. But the other part of me is really excited to have a bad ass woman pirate in the attraction. And on a fun fact note, there is a story that I had heard multiple times years ago while working there that actually fits into the new scene that is coming up. I was told that the red head at the auction, is the same red head naked woman painting on of the first scenes. She wears red and orange striped socks. The same socks we (cast members) wear for our costumes. So the story is that during the auction, she gets sold off, but then later takes over the ship in a mutiny and becomes the captain. So we the cast members are her crew hence the socks. I always loved that little story and it always made me feel different about the auction scene. :)

I think that Disney needs to learn how to present history without endorsing it. In other words- yes the auction was seen as an inappropriate act in today's culture, but Disney is not presenting it as something appropriate to be DONE in today's culture. To take the scene away feels like Disney is saying "it never happened in history". That being said, I am actually very excited to see the new scene. I am more ok with the scene change now that I know that the scene will actually be sort of a cool improvement to the ride. But I'm still sad to see that old scene go.

I'm honestly not sure why everyone is so upset. First, Disney was aware that the park would change as people change. He knew that. Second, for the historically accurate argument, Disneyland is not the place to get an experience grounded in realism. We all know this. Other changes have been made to the ride to make it more PC in the past and we all made it out unscathed. It'll be ok, folks. Calm down.

I think Disney purists are taking this too hard. Walt wanted the parks to grow and evolve with time to stay relevant to later generations. I don't see this as trying to be too politically correct, I just see it as reflecting the ideals of equality that we luckily are increasingly having in our society. It's not like the ride or the movie it was based on was the most completely historically accurate thing before. The movie has strong female characters as well. This is what Disney wanted, so I'm for it.

I'm really torn because I love the original phrase & it's SUCH a classic scene & is historically accurate (which shouldn't go by the wayside for PC purposes), but then growing up I always thought she was up to something more than just being sold off lol like she's smiling & stands out dress wise, so I thought she was maybe secretly doing something else (like piracy). I kind of like adding to her story, but I don't like that it's just to make things PC. Side note there were more female pirates other than Anne Bonny & Mary Read like Grace O'Malley or Cheng I Sao who actually *retired* , which was unheard of. So it'd be nice if they *tried* to keep some historical accuracy &model her story after one of them. Again, don't like changing the classic ride & historical accuracy for PC reasons.

I think people need to calm down. It's not about the being pc, it's about making it more children friendly. Yes the original idea of the ride was to be relatively historically accurate, but with the movie franchise and adding of the movie characters, it's changed from its originally purpose and is more about the movies and being as entertaining as possible. Keep in mind all the movies feature strong pirate women so it would be very fitting to add this to the ride. It also won't overall change the mood of the ride, the ride has changed a lot in the past years and has still kept its appeal.

Saying that removing a scene of sex slavery is ~too PC is so ridiculous man like come on. It's an amusement park, not a museum. Maybe half of the population wants to enjoy the park without being reminded of the horrors we've faced because we were unfortunate enough to be women. Not to mention that shit like that is still happening all around the world. MAYBE Disney as a company doesn't want to be know for their ~iconic sex trafficking scene. Man, I was sad about this because I grew up with this ride and it's sad when things change but hearing everyone whine about this has really changed my opinion. Good for Disney for making a stand. Be sad for nostalgia's sake, but stop whining about removing a scene for being too PC when it's literally about treating women like property.

I don't see how this is a bad change, to be honest. I don't think it's any more PC overload than the change next to it to avoid the rape connotations. I get that classics getting changed is a touchy subject, but Disneyland attractions are meant to be experienced, not viewed in original form behind glass like they're in a museum. I wonder if they'll update some of the tech, too like they've done with some of the other rides, like Peter Pan.

I do like the idea of adding a female pirate and I think that that would be an awesome thing for Disney to acknowledge in the ride. However, I understand that this ride tries to educate the guests on historical events and it kind of stinks that a part many enjoy will be changed. Maybe we should just think of this change as a way of integrating the present values we place on women amidst a series of historical events that helped us get to obtaining more rights. Overall I think that this is a good thing for the ride because honestly I would rather see this new strong female pirate than women being on sale for men.

This is my opinion. Walt Disney once said that the thing about Disneyland that he liked above making films was that once a film was done, he couldn't touch it. But Disneyland was a place where he could constantly make changes, improvements and innovation. Where any story could be rewritten or changed. It was his plan to make Disneyland a living, breathing and changing thing. I like the auction scene as well since the first time I saw it on the ride's opening year, but sometimes change is needed to breath new life into an older attraction. Its the way Walt planned it. And incidentally, in the Dead Man's Grotto area of the ride in the bar scene with the two skeletons, the Redheaded pirate painting in the portrait over the bar is the same redhead in the auction. (Look for the 'beauty spot). That was no accident. The painting is titled "Portrait of Things To Come" by Marc Davis. It's been on the ride since it opened in 1967. So I guess things are actually coming.

Thank you! I was scanning through the comments to see if anyone else mentioned this! Yes, it's changing an iconic scene, but it's still staying somewhat true to the story in that she does eventually become a pirate. Also, she's still there. It's not like they're completely replacing her. Maybe they'll change the chant to "we're with the redhead!" or something. Who knows, we'll just have to wait and find out...

True.. And if it wasn't for the fact that the rides name is "Pirates of the Caribbean", I think they would have had Ching Shih in it. But maybe this glory, romanced attitude towards pirates should be changed. My six year old nephew played with a toy police boat on the floor, and was "arresting criminals that steals boats", and I asked "Are they pirates?".. and he said "Noo.. thiefs". I think we have changed the consept of pirates so much, that he thinks they are adventures. If that is what we want to show, then fair enough. But I think we should keep the criminal and immoral aspect of pirating.

I think the problem is a lot of people who watched these videos is that the majority of people who go to Disney it's not a weekly occurrence it's a holiday! It's for fun, not to look at the "history" of the rides. Auctioning off women as a concept may of been historically accurate but sorry, it's not a appropriate to show that in a family ride anymore that also had things like Davey Jones as a half man half fish monster. If you really think having women not auctioned of as property is too PC then you really need to get with the 21st century

Why do you think it's about being politically correct? Maybe it would just be more inclusive to women to see a female pirate, which there were historically but we never see them.

Roman Jimenez gun violence is WORSE than women and children being sold into the sex trade? (Ok, the ride doesn't depict the sale of children, but that would be historically accurate.) In every single country today this practice is still alive. Depicting it is like telling a rape joke, you are unintentionally condoning the practice because those in the practice (of sex trade/rape) believe that they are hearing confirmation of the appropriateness of their actions. And yes, the pirates were criminals. but criminals against a corrupted government. A life of crime was the only way they would have experienced any freedom, especially the women. Legality is not the same as morality and neither is always right...

I'm not saying that what was there before with her being sold was okay. I'm saying that it's great they took that part out. IT's just don't take it out and then put a gun in her hand. Because then that's just replacing a problem with yet another problem which to me makes no sense. Gun violence is a thing just like rape and sex trade. WE have to look at everything equally. And by disney trying to take away a problem they legit just added another one. LIKE WHAT THAT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME. So what are you trying to prove to me right now.

I feel so frustrated with all of these changes they're doing. When they first changed the Pirates ride to add Jack and the others from the movie, I was furious. Because of the fact that it's Walt's ride. Now they're doing this?? I've learned to tolerate what they did before, but I don't know how much more I can handle. They've already done so much. I wish there could have been some way to preserve the rides Walt made, to keep them original because they're historic. As much as I'm all for female pirates, this sucks. Especially since I've never heard one person complain about that scene.

Here's my view on the situation: Changing it is not necessary. People are worried that it's gonna affect their children's lives. But it won't. Your kid will not care. Your kid will forget about what happened a few seconds later anyway. You worry about making it more child friendly. If you do that, you would have to remove the ENTIRE ride because nothing about pirates is kid friendly. Pirates don't save their friends or stop bad guys like they did in Jake and the Neverland Pirates(seriously Disney, you have a movie franchise dedicated to pirates, why do you all of a sudden not know what pirates do). They were law breakers. And women during this time were auctioned off. This is what happened. Nobody can change that. "Oh, there were female pirates too!" Seeing a woman being sold off is more common than seeing a female pirate "They're just making it more child friendly!" as I said before, get rid of the entire ride if that's your goal. "This is to show kids that women can do things too!" There are other ways to show your kid this. One way is showing them movies or shows that have a strong female lead. "It's gonna make me have to explain sex to my child!" No it won't. Your child, first of all, won't understand the concept. Second of all, your kid won't be paying attention to the plot because they are distracted by the animatronics. The only reason it's changing is because people are extra sensitive these days. You probably watched cartoons that had a lot of slap-stick in it but won't let your child watch it because it's "too violent." You probably watched Disney as a kid. Parents were killed off in those movies. Do you not want your kids watching those either? No, I'm not against her being more badass or whatever but the only reason it's being changed is because people are being sensitive and complaining about stuff that doesn't even matter that much. Here's a tip, spend your time complaining about things that actually matter and not Disneyland rides.

Would you be as angry if they were taking out a scene that had become a classic of a slave auction? Because that's what this is. A slave auction. That they're taking out because let's be real, this ride is not 'historically accurate', so using that excuse of 'but this really happened!' Is ridiculous. I'm kinda disappointed in Max right now. The scene was classic 60s and 70s, which is fine, but it's sexist and has a threat of making the ride not age well. Disney is working to keep their family friendly parks and changing a culture they have a lot of effect over. It's something that you might not have a good vantage point to view this as historically white men were more likely to be the enslavers than the enslaved (noticed I said more likely, not always. I know it still happened) but it will have an effect on kids still. Very small, but still.

I see your point. But I hope we are still showing of the immoral and criminal aspect of pirating in this ride. Glorifying pirates is for me a bit more then offensive. My nephew (age 6) was playing with his toys on the floor, where he arrested people who steals boats. And I asked if it was "pirates" he was taking in. Which he replied.. "No.. I take only thiefs". If we make kids think that pirates were treasure hunter, with a fondness for the bottle. Then I think we have seriously messed up a bit. In this particular situation, maybe it is okey. But the great part of this ride for me, was that it scared me. It was a look into a savage lifestyle. I do hope they will keep that, and not feel pressured into making this ride a no violence, no alcholised, no offensive tour. What Disney portrayed in that dark dungeon, wasn't glorified. And I kinda respected that.

The scene literally depicted women being sold as property, any rational person should be able to understand why that's problematic. PotC isn't a historical ride meant to spark meaningful conversations, it's a family ride where women are shown as being less than human as a joke. Sorry to all the bigots who love to laugh the idea of sexual servitude, but that's not in-line with the general public's values anymore and does not belong on an attraction geared at families.

While I can't say I am 100% on board with the history argument, as Disney isn't really known for realism, but I am still VERY pissed that they are making this move. It's an iconic scene of the ride, and taking it out is a huge mistake. If they want a different type of ride, they should make a new one somewhere else instead of changing the classics. It clearly has nothing to do with Disney thinking the ride is offensive, as they have made numerous changes to POTC over the years and still haven't touched the auction with a ten foot pole. My guess is that they are afraid of a controversy starting, and wanted to remove the scene before one did. Ironically, all this did was create controversy.
