Fun fact: what roku did last episode wasn’t really what a firebending master is able to do but what a fully realized avatar can do. In one of the avatar books they talk about the impact of distance and quantity on bending. It’s really interesting.

2:52 No, Aang picked up water-bending as quick as he did because of the similarities in technique and ideology between the two styles; air-bending is about harmlessly redirecting or even outright avoiding conflict. hence why he's predominately a pacifist and is almost never taking offensive actions against his opponents unless he's defending others. Water-bending is similar but seems to focus more on draining an enemy's stamina until they're simply to exhausted to fight, or can find an alternate solution, like how a river wears down and shapes rocks with erosion rather than simply annihilating it with brute force or just stopping completely and not even bothering to try.

Taken directly from my tai chi master. You are trying to use as much of an opponent's energy as you can while sparing your own. That's why the key is to rock back and forth like the tides. Rock back with the force of an attack and turn that momentum into a forward motion that goes back to your enemy. The move Aang did on Zuko in the ship where he was letting Zuko tire himself out by trying to catch him while Aang faced his back. You can even hear Zuko letting out winded, exasperated breaths trying to catch Aang. But yeah, both are about using as little of your own energy and having your enemy do the work, either by using their own energy against them or waiting until they tire each other out. Iroh says as much later about the waterbenders. Bitter Work. Not spoiling anything but it's a good reference episode.

I love this episode purely for the fact that its one of the first ones that shows that non-benders can keep up with benders with skill and the right circumstances

There is water in the air and there is air in the water. Both are fluids, so it just makes sense waterbending comes natural to Aang like this.

The change in Sokka's attitude was largely due to his voice actor, Jack De Sena. He wanted to do a more silly voice for Sokka to match his own personality because the character was initially meant to be serious and "Dry-wit" as they described it. The writers liked the change and decided to roll with it

So each element has a real life martial art associated with it. So the styles of bending really are quite different.

That's right. Air Bending is based on Baguazhang. Water Bending is based on Tai Chi. Fire Bending is based on Northern Shaolin Kung Fu. Earth Bending is based on Hung Gar.

Well, avatars tend to be very strong benders, but aang is indeed a prodigy. He earned his tattoos very young, showing ge already mastered air bending. Also, water bending has a lot of similarit to air bending. The difference between aang and katara in that episode is also: aang already knows bending, he is learning a new element. But katara didnt know how to bend at all and had no one to teach her.

I love how (spoilers, but you guys have already reached this bit) buying/finding a new Lotus tile actually was more important for Iroh than finding the Avatar because of the Order of the White Lotus. Without his Pai Sho tile, how could he identify himself as the grand lotus?
