If going for a morning run, you need a specific type of shoes, if going for a party, you need another type of shoes, if going on hiking you need a different set of shoes and if going for a motorcycle ride, once again you need different type of shoes.
Life is all about right TRACTION and the right shoes with a specific design of sole can only keep one planted on the ground with a firm grip.
So be it our foot or a motorcycle wheel, if you are looking for a perfect ride, with the desired traction to perform a special act, one has to be on the right type of rubber compound and a very specific tread pattern.
Yes, I am talking about motorcycle tyres which are our lifeline. Be it road, gravel, rocks or slush, the tyres have to provide maximum grip in any attitude. The tyres are also suppose to give the right type of feedback or the right feel to ensure proper steering control with confidence, while ensuring maximum traction during acceleration, on turns or during the hardest braking.
Depending on the type of terrain you ride, one needs a very specific type of tyre with specially designed tread pattern made of appropriate rubber compound, to provide maximum traction. The moment we talk of a dual-purpose tyre, the problem becomes a bit more complex as off-road includes a mix of everything like sand, dirt, gravel, hard soil, ruts, rocks, water crossings and slush. Naturally to go and return from an off-roading section, one has to still ride on the road and can’t take chances on a tyre which is absolutely dirt oriented. Considering these factor, it becomes a difficult choice to select the most appropriate tyre which can handle every type of terrain.
Rain causes many slippery surfaces including the slush, and if you are into off-roading, one must certainly consider at least one additional pair of shoes for your motorcycle just for the rainy season.
The originally supplied Metzeler Tourance tyres as used in BMW G 310 GS and KTM390 Adventure are very good quality street-oriented tyres which guarantee a high level of mileage and durability together with great grip in both wet and dry conditions. However, moment we talk of dirt riding in wet whole scenario changes. So if you are looking forward to that extra mile of grip from your tyres one may consider switching over to little more dirt oriented tyres.
So looking at the rainy season and to undertake certain trails around Delhi NCR, I decided to fit Pirelli Scorpion Rally tyre in front on my KTM 390 Adventure.
Scorpion Rally uses an advanced compound mixing Process, with innovative materials that provide high fatigue resistance and long-lasting performance. KTM 390 Adventure is a slight nose-heavy motorcycle and the 19-inch front wheel has to take a lot of beating. The die-cast wheels also get a little more protection as Scorpion Rally tyres are much stronger as specially designed for desert races. When in trails or riding through a tough patch, tyre puncture is always a big worry and thereby using a tyre which provides high resistance to puncture is certainly a preferred choice.
So from Scorpion Rally, I move on to Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR which I decided to use in the rear. This is a much softer tyre with bigger contact patch which provides better stability at high speeds, on-road handling agility and perfect grip in all riding conditions including the dirt. A new compound, with a high content of silica, offers increased grip on both dry and wet surfaces, stability and superior resistance to abrasion. Blocks are longer and wider, and the longitudinal distance between each line of knobs has been reduced to increase the contact patch, without compromising off-road traction. Heat, generated by high speed, is distributed across a wider surface to prevent knob tearing.
The chances of skidding or tail slides are limited unless pushed hard on wet sections, so one can go fast and with full confidence.
In extreme wet condition while in slush they might skid but if one keeps the real wheel loaded just by shifting body position, these tyre will sail through even in very bad muddy patches.
So, in my opinion, this makes a perfect combination of front and rear tyre for KTM390 Adventure only for those who wish to undertake aggressive off-roading.
Across the world, many might be already using these tyres on KTM390 Adventure or BMW G 310 GS and maybe their valuable inputs might clarify many other doubts which might arise as you see this video.

Good informative video, thanks for sharing. We were looking for tyre options for our 310GS. For front, rally with 80/20 you told can be slippery on tarmac, we don't tend to lean much on off-road instead we slide our rear. We definitely lean on tarmac and loosing our front is last thing riders want. We would like to know your thoughts/suggestions/alternative for front tyre. Considering our riding nature it's around 75/25 tarmac/off-road. Our plan was to continue with tourance but do let us know if we can have any other considerations. Thanks

1. Scorpion Rally on tarmac is not a preferred choice as it's knobs are arranged in zig zag fashion to give very good bite when in slush, sand or dirt. So one has to be little slow on turns while on road. 2. Yes, when in dirt, preferred choice is to remain perpendicular to the surface and not lean. 3. So if you wish to lean more on tarmac, try Scorpion Rally STR or Karoo3 as it has knobs arranged radially to provide grip from shoulders. It has a rounded profile. 4. I have used Karoo3, both at Spiti in thick of snow plus beyond Manali towards Tso Moriri and found them to be good. for the intended use for these bikes, i would not spend and install such block pattern tyres. these bikes are just meant to be soft roaders at the end of the day.

Near the only garbage dump which comes on the right. From the side of which you enter. However please don't go alone. Best is to visit in a group to cater for any emergency.

See one can always go ahead with one size up and 140 should not have any issues with the fitment. Front wheel upsizing changes makes a lot of difference in handling however rear should be alright. Kindly make a proper check of fitment like clearances from all around before hitting road.
