I always wondered how it was possible that England didn't have anyone other than Joe Hart to put in goal. I think I could name at least 15 Italian goalkeepers better than Joe Hart (and that was very clear when he joined Turin and ended up being one of the worst goalkeepers in the league). There must have been loads in England.

I think Pirlo was ready to sacrifices himself here, one of his friend just missed a penalty, so he chooses to do this risky trick. If it succeed, it will bring some morale boosters for the team but if it doesn't, he will take all the blame for himself.
