Wanna hear a sad story? U-556 without torpedoes and enough fuel to intercept and provide cover, was deep under sea watching Bismarck get pummeled, bombarded, and sank. U-556 and Bismarck had been neighbours in the ways at Blohm & Voss and their construction was completed at about the same time. In January 1941, as U-556's commissioning ceremony approached, Kapitänleutnant Wohlfarth wanted a band for the celebration, but could not afford to hire one. Kapitän Ernst Lindemann, commanding officer of Bismarck, lent him his ship's band. After that, U-556 crew make vow to service and protect Bismarck, vow ending up unfulfilled. To make it more dramatic, U-556 got the Knight's Cross for staying in combat and reporting the situation, watching his big brother sink into the sea.

Well, a large part of that was because the British were fucking *pissed* about Bismarck sinking the Hood. Bismarck was definitely a credible threat and they would have gone after her anyway, but the sinking of the Hood is a large part what lit a real fire under them and made the whole thing, "We're throwing literally everything we got out there and we're sinking the Bismarck fucking now!".

I dont think people actually know how accurate this actually is. The Bismark was plagued with bad luck from the moment it left dock. It was immediately spotted by British planes. On top of that, the first volley it fired damaged it's radar system, making it unable to detect the Norfolk and Suffolk (I could be wrong about those two) Then, the Bismark went straight into the British Fleet. The Bismark also didn't kill a single Swordfish plane, and the bad luck icing on top, the rudder was jammed by a lucky torpedo from the Ark Royal. So the British Navy got INCREDIBLY lucky in the sinking of the Bismarck, and there were so many points were it could've gone to shit very quickly.

@@ch0mpd136 It was more likely a bunch of small mistakes that doomed Bismarck: -No escort ships, even Prinz Eugen wasn't there when needed. Germans were fixated to start Bismarcks operation on Atlantic as soon as possible. -After the battle with HMS Hood, Bismarck was leaking oil and needed to get some repair. Instead of returning back to Norway and choose the safe way, the head to the Atlantic trying to reach France. -British aircraft (Catalina type) spotted Bismarck but they lost him quite soon. Bismarck was heading south while the British fleet was heading north. Either Admiral or Captain of the Bismarck (can't remember) broke the radio silence and that allowed British to relocate him and continue the pursue. -The Anti Air protection in Bismarck wasn't bad, but it wasn't designed to hit so slowly moving targets as biplanes. Anti Air missed most if not all of it's fire vs Swordfish. -During the Swordfish planes attack, Bismarck turned into "wrong" direction (away from the attack) to dodge the torpedos, exposing it's vulnerable rudders and propellers straight to those torpedos to hit. Had it choose to turn on the other way (towards the attack), if may have been able to dodge those torpedos, and even if not, it could have been able to took that beating. British torpedos that time were poor. After the rudders gone in Bismarck, British battleships bombed him 90 minutes but couldn't sink him. Upper parts of the ship were mostly gone but it was still floating. Germans decided to open the scuttling hatches and sink him by themselves to avoid him getting in the hands of Allies.

What's funny is that after the final battle the ship wasn't sunk. He was scuttled. But before he was scuttled and after the battle, he was still afloat. After he was scuttled, prime minister Winston Churchill saluted the ship and crew as warriors and fighter till the end. A badass ship he was and the final true battleship to go down in battleship v battleship combat. He was also the largest by that point in time until the Yamato came in. But he had more of a reputation of it being more famous than any other whilst having a short service history. A ship with a worthy name of the "Iron Chancellor." To the Bismarck and its crew, I salute to you you brave men. You'll all be legendary with an almost truly unsinkable ship until the end of time.

FYI the drawing of the exploding ship at 3:42 is NOT the KMS Bismarck but the HMS Hood. I saw that same drawing in a documentary about Bismarck and Hood. It was presented at a hearing about how Bismarck has sunk the Hood, apparently it was a lucky shot in the room next to the magazine chamber and the munitions blew up.

Everyone talking here about how battleship Bismarck was sunk by few lousy biplanes... First fact, it was after engaging with the best ships of the royal navy at the time HMS Hood, class battlecruiser(almost the same class as battleship) and heavily damaged the V-class battleship HMS Prince of Wales, the most modern and one of the largest royal navy vessels, with help from only a heavy cruiser Prinz Eugene, but it suffered a leak of water into the oil reserves. Second fact, it was chased by six battleships and battlecruisers, two aircraft carriers, thirteen cruisers, and twenty-one destroyers AND when Bismarck turned to face them THEY FELL BACK and thanks to that Prinz Eugene was able to escape the pursuit and eve after this fight slowing him down, the steel beast was able to match/outspeed King George V battleship. Third fact, there was nine torpedo-bomber aircrafts attacking it and it EVADED 8 out of 9 torpedos shot at it, the last one hit it and causing minor damage, it suffered more damage from evading the torpedos tha getting hit by it. A this point the royal navy ships were already low on fuel, from chasing Bismarck. Fourth fact, royal navy had to add even more ships to chase because of the fuel shortage. Fifth fact, it was attacked by torpedo-bombers again, this time 15 of them, it suffered two hits, one again cousing only minor flooding and the second damaged the port rudder, by only luck, jamming it on 12° and making it irrepairable and turning in a large circle, Sixth fact, Lütjens, captain of Bismarck signalled headquarters at 21:40 on the 26th: "Ship unmanoeuvrable. We will fight to the last shell." And so they did... Cruiser Sheffield briefly engaged them and quickly ran, another five destroyers were chasing the Bismarck and polish destroyers were too, polish destroyer engaged and was forced to flee, after that two royal navy battleships and two cruisers engaged the crippled Bismarck, it only fell due to it being unable to properly aim and it still damaged one of them, otherwise it was an actual beast, as i cite "Overall the four British ships fired more than 2,800 shells at Bismarck, and scored more than 400 hits, but were unable to sink Bismarck by gunfire. The heavy gunfire at virtually point-blank range devastated the superstructure and the sections of the hull that were above the waterline, causing very heavy casualties, but it contributed little to the eventual sinking of the ship." The germans meanwhile shot back and scuttled the ship, which caused it to sink. As you can see, neither the planes nor royal navy was really able to actually sink Bismarck, the dumb luck and impulsive officers above the ships captain did... In the end only 114 out of 2200 crewmembers survived, others died valiantly, even though they were fighting "on thewrong side".

1. The Hood was not one of the best ships of the Royal Navy. She was a 20 year old Battlecruiser in desperate need of a refit, but was sent out because herself and Prince of Wales were the ONLY Capital Ships in range to intercept. Had the Prince of Wales not had malfunctions with her quad turrets, it's likely that the Bismarck would have suffered more damage, as PoW hit the Bismarck 3 times and critically injured it by putting a hole through the fuel tank, while the Bismarck had not managed to damage anything critical in the PoW due to the "All-or-Nothing" armour layout making the critical locations the most heavily armoured, while leaving non-critical areas less armoured. 2. HMS Rodney received damage due to her boilers overheating as her 16" guns were firing non-stop into the crippled Bismarck for an hours. 3. The "Fleet" chasing the Bismarck were not chasing, they were LOOKING in the gigantic Atlantic for the Bismarck. Two Heavy Cruisers were shadowing the Bismarck and, once the Bismarck attacked them, those Cruisers were the ones that fell back, not this giant fleet you state, since it if DID have 6 Battleships, it would have accepted the Bismarck's challenge for a straight-up fight, and proceeded to club the Bismarck within 20 minutes with 6 Battleships. The Bismarck managed to surprise the Heavy Cruisers following it due to Radar and Sonar malfunctions, which allowed the Prinz Eugen a chance to escape, before it developed engine troubles and returned to Port while the Bismarck was being clubbed to death. 4. The Royal Navy, at such close range, were unable to lower their guns enough to hit the critical areas (citadel) of the Bismarck, as the shells kept bouncing across the water and slamming into the upper hull and superstructure, which Rodney had obliterated with a single salvo after 10-20 minutes. Had the British moved to further range, they could have torn open the citadel area and sunk the Bismarck faster, but they seemed to be taking their time with the slow execution as revenge for the Hood. 5. The Royal Navy DID sink the Bismarck. By the time of the scuttling, the Bismarck was listing 20 degrees to port and that list was ever increasing, and it was settling in by the stern which is a tell tale sign of sinking, which is why the RN ordered the ships to return to port, while leaving the Cruisers to torpedo Bismarck (the area hit is currently buried 20 feet into the sea, so we cannot see where those torpedoes hit and how much damage they did) and pick up survivors. 6. All the scuttling did, if it even happened, was to speed up the sinking of the Bismarck. No matter what, it was going to the bottom with no chance of recovery. Even IF it wasn't sinking, what would the Germans do? Tow it?

Great to see you again, I can say, seeing you upload again is amazing. I remember, first song of sabaton I knew, was The Last Stand, I was bit new to the genre so I was picky at first, eventually (after listening to The Last Stand fifty times presumably) I moved on to other videos on youtube mostly finding you, the songs were great, and the history in the description helped put a scene together in my mind in front of me, not just a song, or battle, but a legend.

Personally, I think that not lingering on the part about the destruction of the Hood was a good move on Sabaton's part; given that most of the RN action in the music video was on Prince of Wales and King George V, with brief cameos from Dorsetshire (which I'm guessing was also the ship that the German sailor had been rescued by) and Ark Royal, the sheer amount of metal that Hood would have added would have been overboard.
