Think of Inductor as a large body of mass which has a huge inertia. When you apply Force, it doesn't move initially. Similarly when it is in motion, when you apply Brakes, it doesn't stop immediately.

Great video. I like to explain change in current as it relates to energy. Since energy is stored in proportion to current squared we can not have an instantaneous (time-less) change in energy. Energy can not move in 0 time. So current can not jump.

Hi, there sir, for the lamp to start, the starter has to be closed, yes as you said, when the light is on, current passes through the lamp, yes as you said, when the lamp is completely lit up, current flow through lamp, I agree as you said, what happened next is starter cools down and closes, my question is, due to this action why the lamp won't flickers, please reply.

Thank you very much for all your great educational videos....i have a question pls : as you said at time=0+ the induced inductor voltage will be nearly infinity , so shouldnt that large induced votage induce large current that would overcome the original current from the battery? , and hence the current will be anti clockwise ?....thank you and looking forward for the answer .

What is a resistor? It is the property of a conductor which determines the current produced by a given difference of potential. This makes us remember that a resistor is a conductor first. And, there is reason to say that superconductive wires don't obey ohm's law. A working definition for current in conductors like metal wires is "the start-stop motion of millions and millions of conduction band electrons everywhere within with a drift superimposed". The e.m.f of the battery is due to separation of positive from negative charges which produces an e.m.f across its terminals and a pattern of electric field surrounding them, not exactly but like a dipole. Consider a simple circuit comprising a battery, two wires and a resistor. An electric field is there in the wires and in the resistor; powerful electric field and uniform within the resistor, weak and uniform within the wires. The field is set up by a tiny amount of surface charge with a steep gradient on the resistor and not so steep a gradient on the wires. It is the electric field E created by the surface charges sourced from the battery, which produces a force causing the mobile electrons to acquire a drift velocity v = μE, where 'μ' is the mobility which is a number representing the freedom of movement of the electron in the lattice. This results in a current density J = σE, where σ is the conductivity of the wire or material of resistor and E is the electric field in the wire if considering wire and is the field in the resistor when considering the resistor. The p.d. or voltage across the resistor is the integral of a constant powerful field along its length. The p.d. or voltage across the wires is the integral of a constant but weak field along its length. Voltage is entirely because of the surface charges. Capacitive reactance The capacitive reactance is expressed in ohms and it is useful to determine steady-state current values to sinusoidal voltage inputs. Although the value of the reactance is expressed in ohms, it was not obtained by computing a resistance, as of resistors. The current in the wires of a capacitor circuit is due to the resultant electric field E(NET) (a resultant of the applied field and an opposing electric field, the fringe field of a capacitor), obtained by applying the relation for current density J = σE(NET), where σ is the conductivity of the wires. The field in the wire which may vary sinusoidally is always a resultant of the applied voltage which may be sinusoidally varying and the fringe field due to charge accumulation on the capacitor plates. For a comprehensive description of the mechanism of current leading the voltage across a capacitor see the book references below. Inductive reactance The inductive reactance is expressed in ohms, and is useful to determine steady-state current values to sinusoidal voltage inputs. It is to be noted that though the value of the reactance is expressed in ohms, it was not obtained by computing a resistance, as of resistors. The current is on account of the resultant of the applied field and an opposing coulomb electric field, which is due to polarization by the non-coulomb curly patterned electric field associated with the changing magnetic field, and the current obtained thereof by applying the relation J = σE(NET) where E(NET) is the resultant field of the applied field and the coulomb electric field and where σ is the conductivity of the wire. For a comprehensive description of the mechanism of current lagging the voltage across an inductor at different frequencies see the book references below. Electrostatics and circuits belong to one science and not two, that of electricity and magnetism. To know how they are unified visit this link matterandinteractions.org/articles-talks/ and view the article 'A unified treatment of electrostatics and circuits. B. Sherwood and R. Chabay, unpublished. (1999)' pdf.
