@fugfug57787 жыл бұрын
Notice the fact that he was probably 20 years ahead of his time. He was a consistent shooter from what we call the three point line even before it was established. He influenced magic who influenced every other flashy point guard. He created moves that no one uses anymore due to the difficulty of the move. He created moves no one saw and left judges and casters speachless and their only words were "I've never seen this before." He had the jelly layup, the dream shake and rondo fakes, the long outlet passes even before the terms were even created and he doesn't get his name mentioned in any of them. They shouldn't be called the dream shake and pulling a rondo if there was a creater before that. It's not like he was bad at the move either

Simply the most skilled (yes, the most skilled) player to ever play in the NBA or otherwise play basketball. Dude was trained into being a basketball machine by his father since he was a kid. His handles were outstanding, none in my opinion even matches his ball-handling skills. His shooting was legendary in a period without a 3 point line, 45 points average in the NCAA and 24 points average in the NBA (one season he averaged 31 points). He obviously could have done better in the NBA if it weren't for injuries, off the court problems (devastating news of his mom taking her own life because she wasn't given attention to due to basketball, alcoholism [he even played games super drunk] and other stuff) and problems being in the league (one of a few players to get a 1 million $ contract at the time is bound to be pressured by teammates and everybody alike).

Yes, it would have been nice if that had happened, but injuries -- nasty knee injuries in particular, forced him to retire before his time. He got to play the last part of his final season with the Celtics and Larry Bird. The NBA finally instituted the three point shot that season, and Maravich shot 67% from behind the arc. Just imagine how many points he would have averaged had that arc been there for his entire 10-year career? He was a cross between Harlem Globetrotter and NBA professional. He was fundamentally sound, but played with pizzaz and flair. He gave the fans a show.

I didn't see my fave Maravich moment which I still remember watching as a kid. Fast break against the Lakers he's in the right lane and he does a behind the back pass that travels THROUGH the LEGS of Kareem (I believe) to his man for a layup. Does anyone remember that all time play?
@Joscope8 жыл бұрын
+Seth Jacobson Never saw it but totally believe he did that. Wish I would have seen it..
@Futureknight1443 жыл бұрын
Maravich did something similar while on the Hawks where he was breaking down the wing on the left and running at the defender who had his arms up and his legs slightly apart in a defensive stance. He then threw a behind the back pass THROUGH HIS OWN LEGS AND THROUGH THE DEFENDERS LEGS ALL IN ONE SMOOTH MOTION just as he stopped and was almost chest to chest with the defender. The ball went through the tight space between both their legs, across the key on one short bounce, and right up and into the waiting arms of his teammate who was cutting in for the basket!! He also threw this pass with his left (off) hand, which if you know anything about Maravich is that although he was technically a righty, he was almost totally ambidextrous. The most amazing thing about it was that his teammates knew to move and cut away from the obvious flow of action and went to areas and spots on the court that would normally be impossible to receive passes from. Except that they all knew that Maravich could DO the impossible on a basketball court, having seen him do these kinds of miraculous things time in and time out in practice, scrimmages and games. He was truly one of a kind and totally unique. An unrepeatable creative genius the likes of Mozart and Paganini.

Ricky Rubio is not even close to the Pistol. Pete introduced the United States to showtime basketball and influenced so many after him ie. Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, and Jason Williams. He showed that basketball doesn't just take strength and height it takes skill, confidence, and the art of deception. Ricky Rubio should not even be on the mind of anyone when remembering Pistol Pete. If it is than that poor person should never watch basketball again thats just plain silly. Plus Rubio needs much more than a shot, he needs to develop a shot, confidence in that shot, the ability to stay calm, and he needs to improve foot work.

Zach Bailey Don't forget Bird, Magic & Isiah. Pete had a huge influence on those guys. They used a lot of The Pistols passes on a regular. Pete introduced street to the professional level at a time when that style of play was frowned upon & deemed 'hot doggin'. They didn't even let the college guys dunk early on smh.
