Just a couple of tips, get some cans of CRC or WD40 to spray those nuts before you try and undo them. Also you need proper impact sockets for that tool, normal sockets may just split under the load . Enjoying the series 👍

I was using PlusGas but ran out of it so I'll find some WD40 when im down the railway next, glad you're enjoying the series!

Getting to enjoy the fun of working under rolling stock Ollie. Used to do loco maintenance for a living years ago and spent many an hour crawling around the pits. With the bolts and pins that won't move try giving them a good spray with wd40 or something like it. Wait a while and try again. If that don't work may have to get serious and use some heat. Wear gloves and remember those bits stay hot for a while.

Yeh maybe next time we may have to get the blowtorch out! I’m hoping I can get them all shifted to save time later on down the line when it comes to reassembling the brake mechanism

Hi Ollie, great up date, I suggest a purchase of impact sockets (normally black in colour) as normal sockets tend to spilt or shatter in use.

Impact wrench is the way forward, but not sweaty hands. My 40th birthday is two weeks away, and I've got a much better way of celebrating. Nothing says happy birthday to me better than a Llangollen Railway train ride.😀🚂🚃🛤

I suggest you buy a long breaker bar. Not expensive. This is for loosening severely tight nuts and saves damage and wear to ratchets or your impact gun. Even consider a 3/4 bar and some sockets to go with it. Soak rusted nuts with diesel or wd40 helps a lot too

Yeh after the video I got a couple more to move but a couple are still completely stuck so will have to try the WD40 next time I’m at the railway!

@@WardleRestorations giving the head of the bolt a good "love tap" with a hefty hammer does wonders to break the rust seal too. It's surprising. You are doing a great job, and hopefully feeling we are all trying to give help and advice from the comments here. Regards Gary

Nice video Ollie. Yeah, that was good of the folks at Machine Mart and Clarke for the Hammer Drill Set! The piece certainly came in handy on that undercroft of the Brake Van. I've worked on such seized areas before the Power-Tool Revolution, as it were, and I could've done with a decent, handy hammer drill. There were the Pneumatic ones but on site, a compressor was a lump to move about! I dare say that a soaking with the old 'releasing/penetrating fluid' on the seized areas helps, but much done without it. The socket would be less prone to slip too. Great progress, and the van blocking in the Brake Van fine there. Quite a day, sore neck with the reaching up from the pit there? All the best with the Vans Ollie. Keep Safe. Cheers!

You might want to get a deeper socket so your fully engaging the castle nuts and not just ridding the top of those, the castellations can crack off

It would fit on there if it wasn't for the rust. Now the rust has been removed, it fits on fine but cheers for the tip

I've never seen anyone wearing a safety helmet when working in the pits and that's when they're under steam locos which seems far more dangerous than a brakevan.
