Pitch Correcting Character Voices: Total Drama Island '23

The Italian version of Total Drama aired at a different framerate than in North America, meaning it must be sped up to compensate. (Thanks, commenters) - In this video, I slowed the footage down by about 4% to see what each character's voice sounds like without the pitch shift. This should hopefully give a more accurate look as to what the characters' voices sound like.

I always felt the pitch was somewhat higher, especially with the Ridonculous Race. The pitch correction is much better, especially for Zee because it adds more to his chill, laidback character.

This pitch revelation makes a lot of sense. I always found Terry McGurrin’s portrayal of Chris quite different from how he sounded when he voiced Don in Ridonculous Race. It seemed that he would stretch out the last word of almost every sentence or heighten his voice in an attempt to replicate Christian Potenza. As Don, Terry had a smoother base with the tone no matter what emotion he gave Don. Nice to finally have some clarity. 😊

Reason: The pitch is higher because, in Italy and most European countries we use PAL. When they decide to air the season in Canada and in US, the pitch will be corrected thanks to the NTSC.

the pitch being higher is actually because in europe they have PAL which runs at 25 fps as opposed to the north american NTSC 24. so the shows have to be sped up by 4% and video games (at least back then) had to be slowed down 17% to not mess it up. since italy used PAL for TDI 2023, that’s why the english audio is higher pitched for now until we see an official release in canada and america. edit: damn someone already said it

Wait that’s crazy bc I heard the ntsc standard was 30 fps. That’s why old pal video games were actually slower. I thought 24fps was the cinematic standard. Idk though. Are they different? How was ntsc simultaneously 24 and 30 fps so that shows were 24 but games were 30 and translating to pal happened that way? Was total drama always like this? I grew up on pal and I never noticed everything being smoother and higher.

Fun Fact: In Italy when they aired TDI, TDA and TDWT the pitch was normal/corrected. But from TDROTI onward (TDAS (except episodes 2 and 3), TDPI, RR, TDR and TDI 2023) they decide to crank up the pitch due to PAL. Also TDI, TDA, TDWT and TDROTI uses the standard 4:3 scale. From TDAS onwards thanks to the transition from 4:3 to the panoramic 16:9, they decide to use the panoramic 16:9

How I watched this show was first of all, I only got to see it through someone’s google drive, secondly, I used my pitch shifter to slow down the audio to NTSC. There was a slight delay in audio as a result, but I’ll take it over higher pitch like I’m in Britain get outta here with that.

Just thinking right now about how in real life as a high schooler, I know a Millie, Ripper, Priya, Bowie, Wayne & Raj, Bowie, Chase, Emma, MK, and a Damien in real life (all in terms of personality of course). I've loved the new reboot seasons (as of right now episode 7 of season 2 is the most recent one out) for how relatable the characters are and the realness of their relationships. And as it was made for gen Z (the new seasons), I think it's a really well tailored show.
