How is this done? Changing voltage to a tape cassette motor or a voltage mod to a chip?

Basically a voltage mod to a chip, the chip has a program that's sped up to riculous speeds, that's how they saved room on it. On the board theirs a resistor that ig somehow controls at what rate the chip is ran at, I replaced that resistor with a potentiometer to make it a variable.
