As a baseball watcher, I love Kodai Senga. As a stats enthusiast, I love Kodai Senga. And whenever he throws that beautiful ghost fork, I LOVE Kodai Senga.

As a Mets fan & half-Japanese New Yorker I’m ecstatic about Senga. Even though we traded superstar future Hall of Fame but aging pitchers Verlander & Scherzer we are still in decent shape for next year starter wise. We smartly traded them for top prospects & also got younger, more athletic & regained roster/payroll flexibility while widening our contention window which was small with al the older players we jettisoned. We have Senga, Quintana, Megill, Luchessi & Peterson. We have young ascending filthy pitchers in the minors like Blade Tidwell & Mike Vasil too. There is no doubt we will be adding at least 2 top of the rotation starters. Hopefully we sign Japanese ace Yamamoto & someone like Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery.

What Kodai has done this season was a best case scenario back when he was signed. He's lived up to the hype and he deserves alot of credit for being able to adjust to everything as quickly as he has.

He should be NL Rookie of the Year! In a year where offensive stats are way up, the fact he's third in ERA is really impressive. And he's gotten better over the year, while the league has adjusted to Corbin Carroll, which says a lot.

I have to disagree about ROY, I think we're past the point where we should be treating seasoned players from the NPB as rookies. We aren't signing their rookies; we're signing their professionals.
@baseballer8370
@baseballer8370 11 ай бұрын
@@MrBendylawthat’s actually a really interesting point…until or unless they change the rule I’d still consider him bc he’s eligible but I’ve never thought of that. On one hand NPB is said to be between AAA and mlb level competition so it is a jump up as well as the fact that it’s the MLB NL ROY and he is objectively a rookie to to the mlb. On the other hand a lot of these guys have had 5ish years at “quadruple A” competition level and they’ve been playing professional baseball at a higher level than any other rookie and I do think the foreign leagues deserves the respect of still being their countries highest level professional baseball. There’s a reason people will mention peoples stats combined between MLB and NPB but not between MLB and MILB
@MrBendylaw

@@baseballer8370The way I look at it is, the NPB has major league level pitching for sure, and I know this because I watch their staff abuse us and the rest of the world every 4 years. I'm a bit biased on this subject, to be fair, since Hideo Nomo beat out Chipper Jones for ROY many moons ago. In any case, Senga will probably get some votes for Cy Young, and this is exactly what I said before the season started; and that I thought he was probably a greater threat than a washed up Verlander or Scherzer to my Braves. The Japanese system produces some truly evil pitching.

I don't even really pay attention to stats, I do the eye test to determine if a pitcher is good. I was thinking "man, Kodai has to be a top 5 pitcher in the NL right now", and it seems like statistically, that is also true.

I hope MLB owners are more careful about NPB pitchers. Sure, they are great players, but cases like Senga are special because he came over just as he hits his prime, loaded with experience and confidence, is proven good pitcher. It remains to be seen how long he can play at a high level. Trying to rob the NPB of their stars only to put them in a difficult position and not succeed can be detrimental to both, and ruin goodwills between the two leagues. Ohtani, for instance, might have lost a couple years of his prime due to playing for the Angels.

Pitching Ninja's analysis on the next Japanese import (Yamamoto) is spot on. I wonder which MLB team will be lucky enough to sign him. As a Mariners fan, I would love to see Yamamoto coming to Seattle. As good as Senga is, Yamamoto is even better.
