I live in Pittsburgh. Our biggest corporation in town, the largest skyscraper here says UPMC on it (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center). UPMC brings in over five billion dollars profit every year, pays ZERO taxes, owns most of the best real estate, is Pittsburgh's largest employer yet claims to have NO employees and claims to be non-profit status. Good point, hospitals and universities should at least pay something. But just to correct, UPMC Health System actually doesn't earn $5 billion/yr. Earnings were 942 million in the trailing twelve months (836 million in 2020). And earnings from operations are even less. Still a pretty big chunk though (and you're right, virtually tax free).

How much does that bus weigh I wonder because the weight limit on the bridge is 26 ton. The average bus with passengers weighs about 48,000# or 24 ton and that bus has a second passenger carriage and third set of axels. Add the 3-4 cars that were on the bridge and it may have just had too much weight on it.

i live very close to there and i would get on that bridge multiple times a day everyday for the past 8 years, it hits different. thank God it wasn’t during the summer where there are a PLETHORA of families and bikers that cross that bridge all the time; during rush hour too when the bridge is backed up with cars. if you know anything about that bridge you knew it was bound to fall. i was walking across it fall of last year and i looked down and said this thing is going to fall it’s just a matter of when. poor 61 twins, i love those buses 😭

Some of the bridges are very old. They stabilize them and inspect them as often as they can, but 4 years' lack of funding (Trump era) seemed to be nowhere near enough to maintain. We used to joke about "Obama dollars" every time we saw a roadwork crew. We hardly saw crews during Trump's. Not enough money to do much about anything. Pittsburgh, Weirton, Wheeling, Steubenville... all lacking.

Thing is, so many extra social programs got attached to the bill (and others) that in the end only $23 billion is now going to the nation's 240,000 bridges that need repair. By most estimates, we need at least 850 billion to address about 1/3 of those bridges. For example, the bill allots a $1billion alone, just to repair the American Legion Bridge (between Md and Va). So $23 billion is a joke (esp when you consider the massive give-aways that went out this past year). Those free-be's could've been used to put people to work (where they would've learned useful civil engineering skills that could've been applied to so many other infrastructure projects).

They don't build bridges like they used to. The Roman bridge in Córdoba, Spain was actually built or engineered and designed by the Romans over 2000 years ago. The foundations are original and the top has been renovated through the centuries (regular maintenance). This had to be a design flaw or lack of maintenance, as this was one of the NEWER bridges in the city. It was built in 1970. There's a bunch of city owned bridges dating to the 1920s and 1930s and at least one from the '80s....The 1880s!

@@backtothelandorganicfarmer6861 Nope, Dozens of busses just like it crossed that bridge hourly until this happened. And this bus was virtually empty since it was an early bus that was outbound from Downtown. So it weighed much less thn it normally would have.
