Thanks for this great tutorial! My pixel art tends to look too "clean", so this has been really helpful and inspiring. Since I've noticed you often draw a rectangle by hand before filling it in, here's a tip that should save you a lot of time: When using the bucket tool, select "All Layers" at the top. This lets you fill in spaces based on the outlines that are already there. :D (This trick also works for the magic wand tool, letting you select anything within an outline you've already drawn on a different layer.)

This is such an awesome youtube find. I'm a high school student who's inclined to arts but chose STEM strand because it fit what my parents wanted for me, and I've been feeling so dejected this year that everytime I tried to draw I'd finish it but be completely unhappy with it majority of the time. Now finding out my drawing software can do pixel art resparked my desire to draw, and then finding out there's someone who's both an architect, a game developer, and an artist? Maybe my dreams of combining media art and architecture aren't as far fetched as I've been repeatedly told. I don't know if it means anything but thank you for being my inspiration this week and I hope to watch your work for more weeks to come.

2:27 the buildings feel so big because in real life we don't see buildings from a bird's-eye-view. We see them from the ground so the upper floors seem smaller in real life since they're farther away. In your game, all the floors are the same height as they're viewed from a higher angle.

You should totally watch Porco Rosso if you haven't done already. I think it'll really inspire you as a lot of the scenes in that capture things you've been dealing with - European architecture and cuisine in a pixel art version of the Studio Ghibli aesthetic. I could totally see your main character getting in a little red seaplane and flying to an island restaurant - insert travel cutscene and flying towards a sunset. Maybe dealing with some pirates on route and then you could incorporate the island and pirate elements into that level of the game. Perhaps you'll have to deal with water leaks or fights between different groups of pirates, maybe you have to keep them out or make sure you have enough space between them when seating them. Or maybe that level only has limited ingredients to choose from, like seafood and fish. The limitations of being on an island could make for some exciting play elements within the story and the restaurant.

@lulu_86153 жыл бұрын
I liked it personally. I think pushing the saturation in places is nice looking, though from we have seen from previous videos it stands out from the more toned down color palette of the rest of the world. That might be a good change to implement overall because the character artist he has also tends to do “pops” of strong color.

I like the plants growing on the wall, but I feel like they are a little flat because there is no indication of them folding or touching the connection between the ground and the wall. Have you thought of adding a screen zoom so players can move the screen out more? It feels very tight and as you said, we can't see the full buildings. You could also pan the camera up so the character is on the bottom and is almost gazing upwards at the full glory of the building. You are an architect right? I'd prefer to see the wonderful buildings you make in their full scale rather then adhere to the style of games I actually quite dislike (pokémon for example) just so you can conform. You bring something wonderful to the table that other games are lacking, you really should embrace that.
@littlesaigon10423 жыл бұрын
You have to shrink the buildings a little bit, it's just a matter of how much. It seems like he's doing a minimal amount. You may think you want full scale buildings, but it wouldn't make sense visually at this resolution. That being said, a little zooming and panning camera controls would be awesome for this game. Maybe even incorporate it as an in-game item as binoculars or something.
@PixelArchitect3 жыл бұрын
Not sure if Unity can handle screen zoom with pixel art - since it may mess with the pixel-perfect settings. But a panning/ free camera movement option might work? I'm planning some larger buildings, even when shrunken down they still exit the screen. Really want that feeling of the environment surrounding you, without you feeling too small. I think at some point I will have to do something with the camera so you can see the larger buildings. Appreciate the idea!
@littlesaigon10423 жыл бұрын
@@PixelArchitect another cute idea to get around zooming with pixel art could be something like a tower or a lookout point where you can see the town from far away. You would have to be willing to draw a smaller resolution version of all the buildings though which seems like a nasty workload. Don't know if it would be worth it tbh. I believe Earthbound does something similar in the dinosaur chapter of the game
@littlesaigon10423 жыл бұрын
@@PixelArchitect also, one thing I notice about Stardew was that it stretches and scales objects and scenery quite a bit, often breaking the "pixel perfect" motif of most retro style games. But it does it in a useful way that is easy on the eyes.
@PixelArchitect3 жыл бұрын
@@littlesaigon1042 Hmm I'll check it out. I'm fine with breaking pixel perfect, unfortunately Unity is not haha. It creates weird distortions. But I'll play around and see if there's a way to make it work. Would be nice to be able to zoom in and out.
