As a pixel owner I'd say that this could have been a really cool product, had the price been different. Somewhere around 200$ would make way more sense, but as it stands it is overpriced for what it offers. Hopeful for the future of pixel watches though.

The paywall for sleep tracking is a deal breaker for me. There are literally $50 smartwatches like the Mi Band that does this for free.
@evgeniic
@evgeniic 2 жыл бұрын
You will get sleep tracking for free. In the free version of the Fitbit you can see phases of your sleep (deep, middle and lite) (I translate it from my own language so I think you should understand). You also get a score of your sleep. You can see the heart rate at night. If you will pay for the premium you will be able to see time periods when your hr was lower than your hr in rest, and you will be able to see an explanation of your score.

@CJJK as much as I love my AW SE, it’s a bit ridiculous to have a separate phone for this if you are a Pixel user for example and considering this watch. I’d say to get a Galaxy Watch 4/5, that works decently well hand in hand with non Samsung phones too, now that it runs wearOS.

Of course things like the magnet charger and connection issues are outside that realm (connection maybe not idk) but Google has shown me over the years that they do listen to feedback and will make changes based on reasonable feedback if they're getting a lot of it. It gets me through all night and I charge it when I'm getting ready in the morning. No biggie for me honestly, it's solid. I don't mind charging it every morning because if it lasted two or three days, I'd still have to charge it most mornings. Every day just makes it a habit so I don't end up with a dead watch.

I also owned the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic LTE and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro LTE. The battery life is comparable to the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic LTE. The Watch 5 Pro LTE has the best battery life given its massive battery (lasts around 3d on 1 charge) but it is a large watch compared to Watch 4 or Pixel Watch. Many folks commenting here have never used a Pixel Watch. MKBHD slammed the Pixel Watch battery life when the Apple Watch is pretty much equivalent per his own reporting. I love the potential of this watch, I like the way it works, the bands, and I already love the pixel ecosystem. I think the Fitbit branding slapped on top makes it less identifiable as THE Google smartwatch, and instead just a smartwatch, by Google, with Fitbit. I also think the subscription for the rest of the fitness features is a slap to the face for consumers. I don't know how many of the Fitbit premium features are standard on the Apple Watch, but I would think the "free" features should match between the competition. I would like to see the next gen model with improved battery life (by sensor management or whatever is necessary), the removal of the Fitbit side branding/separate app needed for fitness, and features out from behind a paywall that at LEAST competes with the competition. I would also like to see a lower cost, considering the Apple Watch SE is $250 and packs in a ton of features. I think $299 would have been more than reasonable for what this offers.

Most of the tracking features are free, there are only a few that are paywalled. I've had the pixel watch for about 2 days now, I turned off all my notifications for probably 99% of my apps so I just get text messages, email, and signal. That seems to help with the battery life. I have the LTE version and for some reason I think it's actually more efficient on LTE because I am getting about 20-23 hours of battery. I will say the Fitbit integration feels like it was a last minute thing. I think this can be worked on overtime. But like you said, it's a first gen product. The people buying first-gen products are kind of more forgiving on some of this stuff. I'll be interested to see what kind of trade-in offers they offer on it for the future generations. I wouldn't recommend this Watch for the average user yet. However, if you're the kind of person that likes to beta test and have the money for it, go for it. Gen 2 or 3 will be better for the everyday user, It's obvious that this watch has a ton of potential. It's just a little bit underdeveloped at the moment.

At this point I’m wondering if one really needs a smartwatch if nearly all notifications and services are being turned off to make it through a single day.. @nolanhutwelker
@nolanhutwelker 2 жыл бұрын
@@ToolwatchBoutique tldr version "I think the smart watches are getting better, the pixel watch just needs some more work. Smart watches have become a fashion piece, more so than a utility." Long version I don't think there's a lot of people taking phone calls on the watch or depending on their watch for notifications. Most use it as a secondary view of notifications. However, I haven't seen the market research on this; this is just based on observation. Exercise tracking does work and The battery does last most of the day to track your exercises, most of these watches also charge very quickly, so putting it on a charger for 15/30 minutes. You can get through an entire day without an issue. I understand how that seems like an inconvenience, and it is, and eventually the technology will be available to have watches that last months or years with the same tracking tech and screens, however it's not available yet. That technology is currently being researched which would be nanotube carbon-graphene supercapacitor technology. Which technically does exist. It's just extremely expensive and mostly in labs. Haha it's a mouthful, it is really cool stuff if you get a chance to look into it. However till then we aren't going to see full featured smart watches that operate as an extension of the phone, last more than 2 weeks at most with lithium technology. At least not in the current form factor. I think within the next two three years we'll have Android and apple SmartWatches last 3-4 days. They do currently exist with the Garmin watches and some of the Fitbit watches now but they do have their limitations.

@@nolanhutwelker Nice explanation. We see that Apple can achieve 2-4 days depending on the usage with about the same battery capacity as the new pixel watch. What makes the difference is A: the chipset. Google uses a crazily outdated Exynos SoC from 2019, whereas Apple has an in-House chip tailored only to this very Apple Watch. And B: the Firmware. Google‘s WearOS seems much more hungry and unoptimized than watchOS from Apple. I do believe that Google could increase the battery time by at least 30% by optimizing the OS for the pixel watch. Like you said, in 2-3 years they will probably be on the same level with 3-4 days of battery life, but for now the pixel watch seems like a prototype to me.

I used to wear Pebble watches, I've had about 9 of them, actually 😅. A couple Pebble Time Rounds as well. I stopped wearing them when the app sorta stopped working, just before it got taken over by Rebble. Despite what's mentioned in this video I'm actually really liking the pixel watch. Sure, the battery life isn't quite as good, although better than Google mention (used to get 3 days from the PTR versus 1.5-2 days from the pixel), but the added health tracking features and additional android wear benefits makes it worth it for me. Interestingly the standard watchfaces seem to be quite pebble-inspired. Suppose some of the engineers are still alive and kicking working at Fitbit. In terms of size, it's not actually too massive, I like the smaller size as it feels like I'm wearing a normal watch (I have a Timex Marlin auto and it feels the same on the wrist). The main reason I liked the PTR was that it didn't feel massive on the wrist, and I think this retains some of that. Just thought I'd give you some thoughts from an ex Pebble owner/enthusiast. If you do want to ask anything feel free 👍

Marques's comment about changing the watch band at night coupled with the not quite 24 hour battery got me thinking. What is needed is a three-part system: a watch, a charging night-stand and a night-band. The night band just has the sensors needed for sleep tracking and no display. When you go to bed you swap the watch for the night-band leaving the watch on the charger all night. When you get up in the morning, you swap the night-band for the watch leaving the night-band on the charger all day. By making this a fixed routine, you always have what you need on your wrist and the limited battery life becomes a non-issue, plus the thing you wear in bed can be much more discrete and comfortable.

I go to the gym (two workouts) for about 1.5 hours a day, sleep with it, etc. Yes, I'm charging it for about 30 min every morning and an hour in the afternoon (before the gym). So that part is bad. But MAN, the fluidness, the feel, the look, etc. Are spot on. I think it's a great first attempt and VERY much look forward to development for the next few iterations. I gotta say the only setting I have off from default is AOD. And I'm getting well over 24 hours. Today alone I took it off the charger at 9AM and sitting here at 7:20PM I'm at 70%. I think the biggest tip you could give people is notifications are the biggest drain on wear os (I don't doubt the claim about the sensors at all I would love if they queried the sensors less often as well). I've learned this over the years you have to really tailor your notifications to what you really want on the watch.

@OMGVelvetThndr
@OMGVelvetThndr 2 жыл бұрын
@@k2mm I see what you're trying to do and I'll bite. There is a difference in disabling features like "hey, Google" recognition that others suggest (which absolutely doesn't need to be disabled) and suggesting you tailor your notifications to what you absolutely care about. I could argue your phone is draining quickly due to those same notifications as well but it has a 5000mah battery inside so you ignore it. I'm in discord groups that I don't need real time information on (games also fall into this category) rather than having my watch wake up vibrate and ring for all of those notifications like that is just good advice and should not be considered a hindrance to the experience. If you need that functionality I hate to break it to you but there is not a wear os device that can provide that. Not even the savior Samsung (those users are telling you to disable additional features to save battery). If you're an apple watch user yes apple has had their act together on wearables longer despite being late to the party. As an android user I am quite jealous. But this fills that gap for me and I have no problem recommending it. Could it be better? Absolutely. But a lot of things are being way over blown on this device. It's pretty great overall.

Only thing I wanna chime in with is the one thing you didn't mention was the fact you can stream music without needing it to be Bluetooth tethered to your phone - got the Galaxy watch 4 with the expectation I'd be able to use it as a streaming device I could use while leaving my phone at home. Turns out, got can't even fully set up the watch and get functionality if you don't turn on all the tethering and sharing permissions, which to me defeated the sole purpose I had for buying the thing. I returned it later that same week because I JUST wanted a way to connect my earbuds to a smaller device that didn't need to weigh down or bounce around in my pocket on a run, for example, and strictly wanted to NOT get notifications on it for phone, text or social media and the watch straight up wouldn't function correctly without those enabled and without being tethered. At the very least, this watch states right in the FAQs that it can stream right from YT Music without needing your phone nearby which alone was almost enough reason to buy, but after this review I'll probably wait til either a sale or the next gen for the fitness features to be better Side note: yes, I know I'm in the minority for specifically not wanting the communication functions, but if my goal is to leave the phone at home the LAST thing I want is to be bothered with calls texts or social media notifications when I barely like dealing with those even with a phone to begin with lol

I got it as a pre-order bonus on my Pixel 7 Pro, and I've been managing to get a day and a bit out of it. I don't see the battery life as a huge problem honestly, if you're going to wear a watch constantly your skin will hate you, so taking it off for an hour or so will definitely help. My main gripe is that I can't get a band larger than the large size. It feels like they designed the bands for the wrists of women. I really like the size of the watch, just want a bigger band, thankfully there is a workaround with the leather band that can be swapped out for a custom band using watchstrap tools. Overall, I'm glad I paid no extra for this watch, Indefinitely don't see it worth the RRP.

Great review. It looks ok, never really owned a smartwatch, put at least it’s more of a classic watch with being a circle vs square shape. Will be neat to see what Google does in the 2nd gen iteration, hopefully they are checking out these videos. Touching on your point of size, they really should offer a 42mm size. This would look dainty on my wrist and I’m not the rock lol

Hopefully some of the issues like heart rate monitoring and do not disturb sync can be fixed with software updates, but i gotta say I'm loving my pixel watch. I had a fitbit sense before this so fitbit was already integrated into my lifestyle and having the google branded 'fitbit' really makes me happy. Battery is a bit of a pain but nothing a charge while showering or later in the evening when sitting relaxing can't fix

I wanted this thing but the battery life was just a deal breaker. The most I'll consider having to charge a watch before it's useless to me is once every day and a half. That's why I had to go Galaxy Watch. Hopefully they fix that in the 2nd generation.

I almost returned the Pixel Watch because I questioned how much use I'd get out of it and was a little annoyed at the battery life but after being on android for years as a runner, it was amazing to go running without a phone or mp3 player and just the watch without having to download anything beforehand. The battery saver function in settings helps the watch go a long way too.

After watching your video I noticed that you can set the watch to battery saving mode that will reduce ECG battery drainage (as well as stop tilt to wake and display always on that you might want to keep). But if you then go to settings you can turn on tilt to wake and battery saving mode is still on. Maybe a little hack to keep the battery lasting longer.

Marcus the heart rate and O2 monitor I think would be number 1 on the list for people who have irregular heartbeats, or heart problems in general. So eating up the battery for that would be no problem. Especially if it's accurate. Also the ECG is FDA approved.

@@catboy3471 heart rate is better in the GW 5 from GW 4 but still it’s the worst in the high end category, apple watches and some huawei watches are far more accurate. Cycling heart tracking and weight lifting heart tracking is terrible in GW 5. Sleep tracking is mediocre at best in GW 5 and O2 readings are a hit or miss always like in all smartwatches though. Check out the reviews by The Quantified Scientist on it, he also reviews other watches and ranks them.

I must say I love my Pixel Watch. It is the by far best looking smart watch to date. It feels superb on the arm and interactions and UI is super smooth. I have not had a single issue in my 3 days with it . Only downside is battery but it is no worse than say Apple Watch or most other small/mid size watches. Not counting Fitbit ss true smart watches. With that said is there room for improvement? Always and the coming updates will be making it even better. But at the end of the day, it is the first smart watch i find good looking enough to wear.

The main take away I got is that the watch is new, if you are used to the watches already out there probably go with them, if you're new and really just want the Google watch it is ok, so I think it definitely is worth buying personally just because I already am using like 5 different Google devices and with updates and newer models coming I will get to enjoy the upgrades along the way instead of the small differences

I have Garmin Vivoactive 3 which is at least a 5 year old Activity Tracker and basic amount of smart watch features but it also tracks My realtime Heart rate every single sec, literally every sec so I don't think this a new technology or even a 2022 feature, I do agree that may be in smartwatch line up its a new one compared to other competition.

I'm sold. Looks futuristic and modern. I'm not one of those people that obsess over bezels, notches and speed of fingerprint readers. What I want in tech is functional usefulness and customization. I don't want to have to fidget and tinker with it to make it work properly. This has been my experience with the Pixel phone. No bloatware, functional, useful and customizable. I'll wait until the price drops to $249 to $299 and a few feature drops before I pick it up. I hate being a part of the camp outside the store crowd.

This watch is exactly what I was waiting for to replace wearing a fitbit every day. I used to use a Ticwatch and a fitbit, but wearing two things was kinda tedious. That being said, the best feature about my fitbit is being able to wear it 24/7 and only charging it during showers. I would absolutely NEED battery life of at least a couple days to be at a place where I am comfortable transitioning. Battery life is the only thing holding me back a this point.

I'm hopeful for the future of the Google/Fitbit integration, but it's just not there yet, and this battery life is a major no-no for me (and this is definitely a Google issue, Fitbit devices have pretty decent battery life). I guess they had to release this watch for schedule and test reasons, but it feels premature. They say sometime next year they're gonna start migrating Fitbit accounts to Google, so it definitely seems they're working on getting things integrated at some point. I'm hopeful that on the next iterations it will be more appealing.

I bought the watch pretty much solely for the aesthetic. So far I'm loving it. For me it's primarily a watch and a way to set reminders. Some definite qualms with lack of complete functionality and the lack of android app support but hey, it's a watch. I'm optimistic for 5-10 years when the tech has got small enough to be actual watch sized. Apple, Samsung, and Google are all failing at making watches imo. Definitely cool tech though. Re: battery, I don't use the always on display. It ways up fast with tilt to wake so by the time I've lifted my arm, it's on. I get 30-36 hours per charge. Maybe there's been a software update since this video but I'm definitely going past 24 hours every day. (BT+Wifi, no LTE)
