Nice one, Col. I'd always thought of tints, shades and tones as being the same thing. So I guess you'd say that common parlance such as 'this shade of red' isn't a good way about talking about colour?

Hey, John, I think it is just one of those things, people say a lot of things that is really factually correct, but, most people know what they mean by it. I'd go mad if I had to correct everyone each time they used tint, shade or tone incorrectly. Maybe I'll just point them to this video :)

what's the difference between a tone and a shade? Since by adding black and grey the colors only get darker, can you give some examples of application?

Hi Daniel, With a tone, you are adding grey, this results in the colour becoming less saturated. With a shade, you are only adding black and this makes for a darker, more intense version of the colour. This article explains in more detail and includes examples. color-wheel-artist.com/hue/
