Raster (Bitmap) Graphics Versus Vector Graphics: What is the difference?

The land of image file formats can be very confusing to the uninitiated. There are so many acronyms and file names, that it is easy to get confused.
Today I'm going to help you learn about Vector and Raster graphics and the differences between the two.

Dude U rock! Your explanation was concise and clear. I design fridge magnets in raster and vector but didn't quite know the technical differences. I was aware, however, that larger raster images when re-sized to smaller images are much sharper. Therefore, when I use raster design, I create the original in a larger format and then scale it down. I hope so to. I do litho print, embroidery, heat seals for garments, sublimation, large format printing, signage etc, it's a constant daily headache going through this every day. Good to see a fellow Scotsman knowing their stuff.

I have used your videos for the Marketing Course that I am teaching in Germany. I was curious if you have a better Vector vs. Raster graphic video. Because I think showing the Raster graphic in Illustrator will confuse those just learning graphic design. I love your videos... and the students seem to like them a lot as well.

Would it be possible to... fake complexity with vector images? I am intrigued in this, particularly because this could be used in shrinking file size of binaries for games or demos.

Hmmmm, I don't really have any expertise in that area. I can see where you are coming from though in terms of decreasing file sizes for gaming assets. An interesting question, I don't have an answer for unfortunately.

Hey, it really depends on what the intended use is. First thing is, you should really only use Illustrator for creating logos as they should be vector format. if you create a logo in Photoshop it will be a bitmap/raster image and you'll have problems when you want to have a logo at large sizes. I generally save my logo files as .AI and .EPS files.

oh, okay. So, whenever I have a client that wants a logo, i should give them the .ai or .eps file, right??? i just finished from a vocational school, I've taken visual graphic design. Sorry for disturbing your busy schedule.

Hey it is cool. To be honest, giving a client an AI or EPS file probably won't be much use to them as they in most instances won't have software capable of opening those files. That isn't to say you can't give them the files. here is what i provide to my clients when I've created a logo for them: EPS PDF TIFF PNG With the PNG file, I'll provide that with a transparent background.
