I think the Freckled Angels album was made to raise money for medical treatment, which he raised by selling to his friends and family. Ren talks about this in his Chapters but I can't remember which one.

Ren did release this album independently. However, Ren had asked Sony for permission to use some of the tracks that he recorded with Sony, and they agreed to let him. This sounds like it is probably one of the Sony recorded tracks.
