This song refers to the infamous, alleged “UFO incident" near Roswell, New Mexico in June of 1947. In the incident, a nuclear test surveillance balloon from Project Mogul crashed at a ranch, although it was initially reported to be a U.S. Air Force weather balloon. However, conspiracies of a government cover-up, with it really being aliens who crashed in a UFO, continue to hold sway today. In the song, Black Francis narrates the flight, tragic crash, and death of an alien, who is described as having been visiting Earth on vacation.
