DUDE! I'm 66 years old, going on 14. Being a member of CN, I was totally intimidated by PixInsight from the comments I've seen posted. (Most posters ASSUME everyone is familiar with PI and throw terms around WITH abbreviations that leave half the CN members wondering what's going on.) This is CONSICE, THOROUGH, and, most importantly, NON-CONDESCENDING. Such great instruction, even admitting where you went 'a little astray' and how to get back to ground. Wonderfully done. Good karma. Can't say enough. Of course, you stabbed me right in my scar (my wallet) by helping me make the decision to buy the full-blown PixInsight. Darn you!!! (JK) Please keep making this series because there are folks just like me that absolutely, and deeply, appreciate your down-to-Earth instructions. As you say, the finesse will come later. But if you don't start, you'll never learn the fine points. I've heard it said that the true sign of an enlightened being is the faculty of APPRECIATION. You make me enlightened with your compassion aimed at the TRUE BEGINNER. John Dobson, the inventor of the scope named after him said, and I paraphrase, "The importance of a telescope is not how big it is, it's not how well made it is, it's how many people less fortunate than you got to look through it..." You, DUDE, let many people experience the same thing. Only this time on a computer screen...or "An 8x10 glossy photograph with circles and arrows and writing on the back of it..." (Arlo Guthrie) Thanks for all you do. And Please keep doing it... MR. GOOGLE!!! GIVE THIS MAN AN AWARD!!! I mean it! Don't make me come up there!

Thank you so much for these PixInsight videos. I was on the verge of giving up halfway through my 1 month free trial, but your videos have inspired me. I spent a day watching, rewatching and making notes, whilst editing my own M31 data that I’d gathered the night before. My images are transformed and I’m looking forward to more hours spent with my scope. Thanks again for this excellent series 😊

I rarely comment on a video,but I want to thank you for these videos. There are similar videos but all they do is show you how to process an image. I love that you l explain what items are, when to use them, why you use them, and when available possible alternatives. Thank you very much.

I just finished #8 (the hardest one so far) and had to play it several times while taking notes, but got there eventually :-) I very much appreciate the effort you have made to make these videos. Hi from way over in England, I would like to thank you for the fantastic videos you have taken the time to produce and put up on KZbin. I have a trial version of Pixinsight having returned to an old hobby now that I have recently retired. I will be purchasing the program just as soon as my trial is over. A huge part of that is thanks to me being able to work through your videos. There are a few other videos on KZbin that I have tried but I keep coming back to your series, they offer me enough to produce some half tidy images and point me toward much more that must be achievable. You clearly know your way around the program and I never feel that I am being talked down, just talked to, I am lucky enough to have a dual monitor setup, you are constantly running on one if I am trying to use Pixinsight. Thanks again, Steve

Thanks Astro Dude, you PixInsight multipart tutorials have been awesome. Previously had been a DSS and Photoshop guy, had always been wary of trying PixInsight due to CN comments about learning curve. Your Total Beginners series truly can take a person who has not seen the PI interface from start to finished product. I subscribed to channel and look forward to your insights on using PI's full capabilities.

i agree. everyone else's videos tends to overlook a lot of stuff constantly assuming things you 'should already know'. its not boring. i like that you keep it simple, slow, and straight forward. ive never processed a photo before, or used any of this software, so other folks videos so far have been useless to me or too complex. people have to start somewhere. i was about ready to give up until i watched this one. hopefully the rest will be as good.

I'm 63. Computer nerd since 1983. Photographer since 1971 (digital since -1998). I ordered a Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer yesterday and started the learning process immediately. I will use it with my Canon 5DS R + Canon 100-400 v2 + Canon 11-24 mm. I saw a 30 min video on PixInsight, from a guy that REALLY was a computer nerd. Wow, he was fast, and a PixInsight-genius. But, even I was a slightly terrified. "What have I done?!?". But, then, I found this, and I'm excited as a kid again. And that was after seeing only part 1! Your teaching skills are 10/10! Hi Mitch. Thank you so much for the Pixinsight beginners series. I have used these videos to produce two galaxy pictures that I am quite happy with, and you made it all possible. I feel like we've spent hours together, but of course it was just me listening to you. I am thinking of trying some pictures of nebulae now, and I imagine that some of the processing steps will likely be a little different. For example, I won't be worried about bringing out galaxy lanes, and such. I wonder if you have some tips about where I would deviate from the basic sequence of steps you outlined in the beginners series. Please advise, if and when you get the chance. Cheers, Paul.
@BrokenPik
@BrokenPik Жыл бұрын
replace HDR for the galaxy lanes , with "localHistogramEqualization" to bring out Nebulae dust ( remove the stars first if you can ) .The trick with Nebulaes is total integration time. careful with LHE it causes a bit of noise. tread lightly. keep the amount around 200. also curves helps with contrast.

Have been a subscriber for a little while, finding your channel via AstroBackyard. Have been wondering if Pixinsight was worth, as what many have described, a steep learning curve. Your basic, plain spoken tutorials were just what was needed for me to evaluate the program before purchasing. Have a monochrome camera and filter wheel arriving today. Being new to your channel, not sure if you use this setup, but if you do, hope you do similar videos on processing using filters. Excellent videos which are a great compliment to Trevor’s and Dylan’s.

I downloaded the PI trial and have yet to use it, with less than a week remaining on my trial, so I was looking for a fast and helpful introduction. This beginners tutorial looks to be exactly what I am needing. I'm only 15 minutes into it but as I proceed, one change I made which may even make for a great "very first step" in this age of 4K high-res monitors, is to change the EDIT > Global Preferences > Core UI Resources for the UI scaling factor, depending upon one's eyes and how well you can read small UI text. In my case, I favored disabling Automatic UI scaling and set a UI scaling factor of 2.0, which seems just about right. Many thanks for this tutorial Mitch!

Hi, In Feb 2018 the DSLR_RAW module was updated to just RAW. But when I click "Pure Raw" and open a color image it comes up and monochrome in Pixinsight 1.8.6. Does yours do that now? In this video it opened as a color image. I'm using a Canon T6/1300D raw format. Just maybe later in the process of images Pixinsight changes the images back to color, but in this first steps the images open as monochrome. Internet searches didn't help much.

2:57 I don't have a DSLR-RAW item in the format explorer. Only a RAW option. So I pressed "pure raw" in that instead but it's still not able to read my Canon .CR2 images. They just appear totally black.

They should be black ontill you STF them or stretch the frame. If not something else is amiss.

Where did my color go? A few months ago I did a beautiful project in PI of M51 shot with my Cannon, so I bought PI. The owned PI requires I do a fresh install (around May 2019). Then with this new install I started working on my M101 project but everything was gray. Using any color module reported the images had no color. The luminence button was grayed out. I thought while fumbling with my Cannon setup I accidentally put it in monochrome mode, but in the mean time I got all the updates of PI. In my current version there is no DSLR_Raw Modules just a RAW module. In that module in Edit Preferences I set it to Pure Raw. Now I started another project. I know I have color images but again... in PI there is no color. Again the luminence button is grayed out. I have to go to View\Color Spaces\Convert to RGB but I still have no color. I don’t understand what’s different between the trial PI version that worked great and this owned version. If I do an AutoBackground extractor and stretch the ABE_Background images it is all gray. What gives? Thanks, B

Hi, as ne new PI "learner", I would like to follow your Absolute Beginners Playlist with exactly the same version that you used for this playlist and get a handle on the program before updating to later versions where there are quite a lot of changes, so could you please tell me the actual version, (i see 1.8 in the screenshots), but which version of 1.8 please?. Thankyou so much
@BrokenPik
@BrokenPik 2 жыл бұрын
Len, i don't think it matters because the 12 parts are guidelines regardless of the version. its not a recipe to follow exactly its more of an outline of what people can use to accomplish good results , in fact some of these steps should and can be skipped. Example: why go through noise reduction if your frames are real clean from dithering or a TEC cooled camera. I suppose the version that was out in 2018 is what i was using. not sure where your going to find that! 1.8.8.2 probably.
