The masterstroke of this song is in her saying “You said something” over and over, something she’s never forgotten and was really important; but never saying *what it was.* Very literary, and it keeps us listening to the end
@jrvr9559 Жыл бұрын
And that "something" could be either "I love you", "I want to call it quits", "I'm sick", "Sorry but I'm gay"... Great, simple but effective songwriting.

Anyone living in NYC in their 20’s experienced this. That magical moment of a night you’ll never forget. And that someone saying or making you feel something you’ll never forget. No matter how short the passion lasted.

Why does it make you sad?
@ashleysmith12764 жыл бұрын
@@Oh_I_Will It has a melancholic feel. Plus - when the album was released (2000) I played it on repeat endlessly, so it was the soundtrack to my life for a while, half my lifetime ago. It reminds me of living with friends at university, going to parties, meeting new people, and falling in love for the first time(s). This song in particular really resonated with me, at a time in life (early 20s) when music is a particularly powerful force. So I suppose it doesn't make me sad, so much as it inspires bittersweet memories of a time now lost to me. I hope that makes sense, beyond being just wishy-washy sentimentality!

I did have both the extreme pleasure and lucky fortune to see her perform live in Seattle, at the Paramount Theatre in late May 1995, where the opening act was Tricky and Martina Topley-Bird performing "Maxinquaye" in its entirety. I still feel beyond grateful for being there at that moment in time, even while trapped in permanent poverty and temporary residence, and still feel deeply sad that nearly 33 years have gone and been done. :'(

On a rooftop in Brooklyn At one in the morning Watching the lights flash In Manhattan I see five bridges The Empire State Building And you said something That I've never forgotten We lean against railings Describing the colors And the smells of our homelands Acting like lovers How did we get here? To this point of living? I held my breath And you said something And I'm doing nothing wrong Riding in your car The radio playing We sing up to the eighth floor A rooftop, Manhattan At one in the morning And you said something That I've never forgotten You said something You said something You said something That was really important

Why don't Americans write songs like this good about NY?
@MickeyFlipper4 жыл бұрын
Robert Thompson But they don’t talk about the experience of feeling love for someone else in New York. This song shows the city in a beautiful light. Not urban sprawls trying to make sense of the detriment of society. Polly’s song is about that feeling of finding the beauty with someone you care about
@donice48354 жыл бұрын
