Really, I think the only time this train of thought is bad is when people treat Japan as exotic, special, perfect, basically act like it's something that it's not and put it on a weird pedestal or glorify it despite the flaws and brush them to the side, or warp it to a fetishized stereotyping of the original culture. This video is great, while of course it points out how weird people can be about Japan, I also love seeing the genuine and respectful amount of love aztro has for Japanese culture! Also, I just love her stuff.

Yeah i feel the same like obviously I wanna go there because saw it in funny Japanese show and I wanna buy stuff. But I also do wanna see the beautiful scenery irl and culture. I wanna go to a temple irl and all idk if I am being cringey or not

That’s the point of the place, Japan meme. People treat it as if it’s on another planet and that nothing bad goes on there, and nothing bad can be said about it. Meanwhile, place, China, people get upset and say a lot of bad things. Last year exactly this happened, with a video at an airport.people thought it was japan originally and were praising it at first, but as soon as the word spread that it was actually in China, people began to react negatively instead

all jokes aside, i like how soft power works and influences us, it's so subtle and all of a sudden you're a weeb. japanophilia has actually been a thing since centuries ago, and japonisme was pretty popular at that time too. when you go a bit further into history, specially art history, we see that orientalism has always been a thing as well. i wonder why japan, though. maybe it's because they understood soft power was the only option to clean their image after the terror they brought to neighbouring nations, but that doesnt explain pre-ww japanophilia so i dont really get it after all
@_blank-_7 ай бұрын
Japan remained independent while the rest of the world was colonized so it might explain why Westerners looked up to it compared to other "exotic" places that were under Western rule, so by definition "inferior" to us. Colonialism needs to denigrate the local indigenous cultures in order to justify itself. "Why aren't they independent? Why do we exploit and massacre them?" - "Because they are savage, uncultured and backwards". "Why is Japan not under our rule?" - "Because they are superior like us, we can't lose to someone inferior". This reminds me of how modern racism developed as a way to justify slavery of black people.
@anti_acido7 ай бұрын
@@_blank-_ ohh i didn't think of that, very interesting!! it reminds me that some racist people in brazil think indigenous people are superior than black people because they were ”harder” to enslave in colonial times...💀

Technically I was just laid over at the airport but i've been laid over in Narita a lot over the years, only ever ate there once. Maybe, maybe it's fucked up but the best takoyaki i've ever had in my life was at a tako stand in Singapore at a mall in Yishun I used to go to every day for lunch. The lady that ran it used to give me free extra tako balls all the time.

2:22 I don't really agree with it. The use of OOH ads in different countries are really cool and I love seeing how they do it, even if the ads are in the US, Japan, Vietnam or somewhere else. Some of them are really creative! 3:47 IMO, I like the ad because of the aesthetic, the vibe and the music. The anime is cool, and there is a wholesome vibe of a happy family. Some ad campaign in Vietnam did the same thing or some even more emotional things and I like the vibe of it. But I can see your point tho.

1:52 I genuinely don't know what it is, but this immediately gets my neurons firing, while the next image is just whatever. Keep in mind, I'm European, and I've never been to the US. Both are somewhat foreign to me. (Though of course I'm more familiar with it than Japan, even despite being a megaweeb.) One thing that always surprises even myself, is that I can always notice in GeoGuessr or similar contexts when it is Japan. Because it just releases the endorphins. I cannot explain it any other way. I look at the plainest fucking vegetation on the side of a road, with no hint of kanji or anything particularly Japan-specific. Nor without any color-correction or other such aspects that would inherently elevate any image. Just a plain old streetview, and I can just tell. Same thing with South Korea, for the same reasons. Even though I'm not a Koreaboo at all. And not to dissimilar to the entire Eastern half of Asia-from Mongolia, to Malaysia. I think there _is_ something inherently interesting about Japan in particular, even if the internet goes way too overboard with it.
