عربی زبان میں لفظ "محمد" کے معنی ہیں 'جس کی تعریف کی گئی'۔ یہ لفظ اپنی اصل حمد سے ماخوذ ہے جس کا مطلب ہے تعریف کرنا
محمد صلی اللہ علیہ و آلہ وسلم کو رسول، خاتم النبیین، حضور اکرم، رحمت للعالمین اور آپ صلی اللہ علیہ و آلہ وسلم کے القابات سے بھی پکارا جاتا ہے
حضرت محمد صلی اللہ علیہ و آلہ وسلم سنہ (570ء) میں ربیع الاول کے مبارک مہینے مکہ میں پیدا ہوئے۔
ان کی پیدائش پر معجزات نمودار ہوئے جن کا ذکر قدیم آسمانی کتب میں تھا۔
مثلاً آتشکدہ فارس جو ہزار سال سے زیادہ سے روشن تھا بجھ گیا۔
مشکوٰۃ کی ایک حدیث ہے جس کے مطابق حضور صلی اللہ علیہ و آلہ وسلم کا ارشاد ہے کہ ' میں اس وقت بھی نبی تھا جب آدم مٹی اور پانی کے درمیان میں تھے۔۔
میں ابراہیم علیہ السلام کی دعا، عیسیٰ علیہ السلام کی بشارت اور اپنی والدہ کا وہ خواب ہوں جو انہوں نے میری پیدائش کے وقت دیکھا اور ان سے ایک ایسا نور ظاہر ہوا جس سے شام کے محلات روشن ہو گئے
جس سال آپ صلی اللہ علیہ و آلہ وسلم کی پیدائش ہوئی اس سے پہلے قریش معاشی بدحالی کا شکار تھے مگر اس سال ویران زمین سرسبز و شاداب ہوئی، سوکھے ہوئے درخت ہرے ہو گئے اور قریش خوشحال ہو گئے۔
آپ صلی اللہ علیہ و آلہ وسلم کی تاریخ پیدائش کے بارے میں مختلف روایات ہیں۔
اہل سنت کے نزدیک زیادہ روایات 12 ربیع الاول کی ہیں اگرچہ کچھ علما 9 ربیع الاول کو درست مانتے ہیں۔
اآپ صلی اللہ علیہ و آلہ وسلم کا نام آپ کے دادا حضرت عبدالمطلب نے رکھا۔
یہ نام اس سے پہلے کبھی نہیں رکھا گیا تھا۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ و آلہ وسلم کی ولادت مکہ کے علاقے شعب ابی طالب کے
جس گھر میں ہوئی وہ اسے آج کل ایک کتب خانہ (لائبریری) بنا دیا گیا ہے۔
یہ کتب خانہ شعب ابی طالب کے آغاز میں یعنی صفاومروہ کے مابین سعی کی جگہ کے مشرق کی جانب واقع ہے یہ 2 منزلہ عمارت ہے اس کی کھڑکیاں لکڑی کی ہیں جو آغاز سے ہی مکہ کی عمارت کا معروف فن ہے
بعض محلفین ذکر کرتی ہیں کہ اس کتب خانے کی جگہ نبی اکرم ﷺ کا گھر تھا جسمیں آپ کی ولادت ہویئ جب نبی اکرم ﷺ ھجرت کر کے مدینہ تشریف لے گئےتو
عقیل بن ابی طالب رضہ نے اسے اپنے قبضے مین لے لیا یہ ان کے اور ان کی اولاد کے پاس ہی رہا
تآنکہ حجاج بن یوسف کےبھائی محمد بن یوسف سقفی نے اسے خرید کر اپنی گھر دار البیضا میں شامل کر لیا
