Someone will know. perhaps the pills were give a number code that only the person who made the pills knows. Then at the end of the experiment, everyone finds out the number on their pill represents the placebo or real medicine.

This was helpful. I'm curious: when they test out vaccines, do they also do these as placebo/double-blind experiments to check for any potential negative effects?
@HCkev3 жыл бұрын
Yes. If a number of people get sick and all or most of them are in the experimental group and not in the placebo group, then we can tell this is most likely adverse effect of the medecine being tested. However, if there are about as much people who got sick in both groups, then we can attribute the adverse effect to other variables.

Self-reporting is also an issue. Could having independent, measurable variables (like, how much can a person lift after taking the pill or placebo) can make the test more stringent? I'm trying to learn about these methodologies to combat superstitious thinking. Thank you for uploading!

This might be a stupid question, but if the experimenters don't know who got what, then who does know? How do they know what the results are at the end of the experiment if they don't know who got what?
@pavarotialman7 жыл бұрын
I dont know but I suppose there must be someone from outside the experiment that help the researchers with that

Ah usually there's a qualified third party that is authorized to know which group is which and such and only tells the researchers the results after the experiment is over.

@ParadymShiftVegan4 жыл бұрын
Yeah but Nocebo and Placebo are both the same effect in principle. The only distinction is essentially whether we appreciate the results or not, but says nothing whatsoever about the underlying psychogenic mechanisms.

I saw an ASAP Science video where they, in a clause, mentioned that a double blind experiment might some times be unethical. Why is that?
@mehtabstudystreams6 жыл бұрын
Fakit the patient being tested may need the actual treatment but don't get it while expecting to.
@doodle60044 жыл бұрын
@@mehtabstudystreams They have to be aware that this is possible, otherwise it is unethical. Most research subjects sign extensive forms acknowledging that they're aware they might get the fake treatment. And they agree to this all the time. :-)
@ParadymShiftVegan4 жыл бұрын
It just depends on what intervention you're testing. For example, we will never have double-blinded randomized trials for smoking being causally associated with lung cancer since it is considered unethical to deliberately bring potential death or great suffering to a person simply as collateral in pursuit of more articulate knowledge. edit grammar
@DeFaulty1018 жыл бұрын
Actually, there's a different word for having a negative reaction to something simply because you believe you were going to; the nocebo effect.
@ParadymShiftVegan4 жыл бұрын
Correct. On a tangentially oblique note, to the best of my knowledge, there exists no evidence suggesting any distinctions with respect to the implicit psychogenic mechanisms.
