When you hit certain age, and you know you have to struggle all your life with depression, angst, death, that you have never feel like others or maybe you just can't figured out why to feel joy is so hard, and chemicals help but also kill you and numb your soul but make you functional.... You can get high with this sonic meaningful song. Placebo never disappoints my dispair. This is exactly how I feel having to deal with meds and depression. Or with bipolar diagnosed lovers and friends. Just drain and then feeling all the emotions but thanks to a pill then better and then nothing. And no one really cares. Fucking deep amazing song. BRIAN MOLKO: “Well, Forever Chemicals was probably the first track on the album that we started working on, and that’s probably why it’s the first. In around 2016, I was sat in my studio with Stef, on the iPad, I had this drum machine, and I quickly programmed the beat, just like that. Then I realised that you could take that beat with this drum machine and put it on to any instrument from an orchestra. So I put the drum beat on a harp and I distorted it and put some delay on it. And then you’ve got that loop that from Forever Chemicals that opens the album, and it’s kind of cool because it was sort of slightly reminiscent of Infra-Red, but more brutal kind of a statement of intent sonically, for the record, to kind of start with that and Forever Chemicals is one of the songs that I rewrote over and over and over again lyrically. It started off as a song about police brutality and I tried to put myself in the heart and soul of somebody who had lost someone, uh, who’d been murdered by the police, then as I spoke to more people I was I was kind of advised not really to go there and I wondered if I was going to be inviting a great deal of aggro into my life. And I’m kind of glad they did because it forced me to go into a sort of a more ambiguous territory with Forever Chemicals. What it’s actually about, I think, is that it is up to the listener.” ♥

I just have to say.....it never fails. In the middle of this studio version of Forever Chemicals I always think my land line phone is ringing. It is creative because it is right when Brian is singing "With friends like you....who needs enemies". Another brilliant line. Having that phone ringing a few times is cool. I take my headphones off every time and think who could be possibly be calling my old 29 year old land line? I love watching the live version and seeing Brian and Stefan harmonize "who needs enemies". I love when rock stars learn very young their style and nobody else has it. They are cool, creative, can put on a great performance but no matter what: there is that part about Brian that has his unique cool way of playing guitar and Stefan the same with his bass. All my favorite bands and rockstars have a uniqueness I can see instantly.
