I bet you can't thank those firefighters enough, eh Mark? They are a special breed of men and women who run toward danger for others. God Bless Them Every One of Them.

It's amazing how people always thank God but never the real people who save them

Wow! Looking at the aerial in the first part of this video, and your tour of the burn reinforces those commenters on your other video. This airport absolutely had a defensible space issue. Incredibly lucky there wasn’t a wind and slope aligned run up this hill, as those hangers would have been destroyed. I’m guessing some of them are fire service like myself and know what they’re talking about.

Very sobering video, Mark. So glad no loss of life or major property. When Juan Browne did that live broadcast my heart was in my mouth. I don't suppose it helps to hear that England is having a very wet summer! 🙄
@skywagonuniversity50234 ай бұрын
Yes, England is very green for a reason. I've been there twice this spring and summer and only saw a few rain days which was good.

Thanks Marc for the update! And most importantly for the news that no a/c were hurt by the fire 🎉 I think it is fascinating part of the US: All those firefighters and bomber plane pilots risking their live while being supplied by a well oiled machine with the right amount of heavy equipment on time! Buy these guys and gals a beer from me next time you see them in a bar.

So happy that you were saved. This could have been so much worse. I visited Placerville Airport many years ago; Such a pretty place. Could there be tanks be placed to add to the fire saftey for future fires or dozer lines?. Any determination on how the fire started? 😊
@skywagonuniversity50234 ай бұрын
It started when a tree hit a power transformer just down the embankment.

Scary stuff! As a boy I remember when a local carpet factory caught fire, next to our school and local housing (mamy friends lived within) made a lasting impression on me (although some kids afterwards bemoaned that it never caught the school alight😲🙄😀). Im glad that youre safe my friend, things can be replaced (as terrible of any loss of property is). The firefighters did so well though, remarkable 🙏👍🤞✌️😊💜💜 I bet planned, preventative maintenance will include regular pine needle removal and maintaining fire breaks from now on🙏🤞👍🤞🤔🤔
@skywagonuniversity50234 ай бұрын
Yes. maybe, but there are no needles now and the pines to make them ;-)

Soooo… who’s cigarette started it?
@skywagonuniversity50234 ай бұрын
It was a tree and a transformer just below the airport. Heat split a tree and the tree fell on the transformer.

I was surprised to hear that the airport was closed- not that it shouldn’t be closed during critical air tanker operations- but how, exactly was it closed? By whom; the airport manager or FAA; and how, through AWOS or by markers placed at the ends of the runway? A very, very close call for all the planes, as well as for all the surrounding homes.
@skywagonuniversity50234 ай бұрын
They close it by Notam and pilots are supposed to check Notams before flying anywhere. (Notice to Airmen) Also a big vinyl X on both ends of the runway. Also a tower of smoke and the pattern full of helicopters and bombers is a bit of a giveaway too. Once it is out but still closed that is by Notam and X's. Airport manager and Cal-fire work out when and how long for. It was closed for a few days after the fire was out for clean up, Washed and blow dried the runway with two rinses and conditioner, and people were still going over the bank on the south side to check for hot-spots and they have to cross the runway to do that.

Actually think you got off quite lightly as far as damage goes. A more ferocious wind could have intensified the blaze considerably and carried it further. Bruce almighty moment of repoting!

yes, we got off lightly.

Looks like it could have been much worse and looks like the firefighters did a great job and are rock stars! 3:15 let's test the mooney identification. M20E lightly modded with the (maybe) 201 windshield, cowl enclosure, oil cooler relocation and an 80s 201 m20k paint job. Also glad they didn't need navions engine water barrel to fight the fire!
@1gibrik4 ай бұрын
Is that Water Barrel Navion still sitting there? I wonder if the county has proclaimed it an airport monument.
@skywagonuniversity50234 ай бұрын
Pretty good on the Mooney.
@skywagonuniversity50234 ай бұрын
The Navion should be in the flight guide as a landmark.
