A big reason the tomb of Qin Shi Huang isn't opened is because doing so could damage the historical artifacts inside. The terracotta army was actually fully painted when they were first excavated, but after being exposed to the outside climate that detail was lost. Unlike Egypt, large parts of China have a humid climate that causes artifacts to rot and degrade. In the future technology might develop so that the tomb can be studied without damaging the contents, so it's best to wait right now. A lot of ancient sites like Stonehenge and the pyramids were damaged significantly by archaeologists that were a few centuries premature of being able to do a proper job.

The big question is: would opening the tomb and looking at what's inside actually have any significant impact on archaeology? I am by no means an expert in East Asian Studies but I assume that we have more than enough examples of 3rd century BC funerary architecture, burial objects etc.. I don't believe that this is the only ancient chinese mausoleum in existence. Yes, the cultural significance of this is huge, but that is just a reason not to open it. As you said, maybe in the future we might have more advanced tech to get a glimps of whats inside, but I don't think it is actually necessary.

@LibeliumDragonfly5 ай бұрын
They did detect larger amount of trace mercury on the actual funeral mound of the tomb compare to surrounding areas, not the actual terracotta warriors site though. So the whole tomb complex was structured to look like the imperial capital, and the terracotta army was essentially garrison troops, so they were just outside the inner palace area, which contains the actual tomb. There is quite a distance between the two.

The main reasons the tomb of the first emperor has been left alone is that they haven't yet figured out a way to open it without heavy damage to the tomb and also both according to historic records and tests done on the site there's heavy amounts of mercury in the tomb that can be a hazard if they open it. These plus the booby traps are the explanations given everywhere, you're the first person I've heard that gives this "not opening out of respect" reason.

I don't believe we have seen the Flag Day episode for Vietnam yet. Do you have something special planned for the last few flags?

He already uploaded it to his short tab. It’s not so hard to go over to the short tab and see the video.

@@zachv No need to be rude. The short didn't pop up in my feed, so I didn't know it was there.

I was in Xian last February, near the Qin Shi Huang mausoleum. The more "official" reason is that current archeologists do not have the technology to dig in properly. So the authorities will rather wait to have more futuristic tools to check and try to scan the dirt.

Rearding the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, China actually has a law about ancient site excavation, it is illegal to take the initiative to excavate an known site. Archeologists can excavate a site only in the event for instance, during the construction they found a tomb then archeologists can come in.

Missed one Arys rock or ularu in Australia It was open to walk up but was close to the public and only aboriginal elders can
@GeographyNow9 ай бұрын
Crazy how they JUST recently did that, thankfully, you can still drive up to the rock and see it. I don’t need to climb up it, it’s beautiful enough as it is on the ground.

@@GeographyNow was closed for climbers in 2019 but yeh you can still walk around it and touch the rock at the bottom

The access to Lascaux in France is heavily restricted. The original caves have been closed to the public since 1963, as their condition was deteriorating. Only researchers can enter, and for no more than 200 hours per year.

There's a guy in Metamora, Indiana that says he has the Ark of the Covenant in Metamora Castle. Can't remember the story, but you also can't go in and see it.

It used to be Gornja Siga / Liberland as there was no way you could enter legally, as Croatian authorities blocked entrance from every side. But since Aug 2023, they have allowed EU citizens to visit. If you are a non EU citizen, you get an automatic ban from Croatia and Liberland/Gornja Siga up to 90 days or, in some cases, even more.

The first thing I thought of was Uluru, which tourists used to climb all over all of the time, but this is no longer allowed as it is SUPER DISRESPECTFUL, so the top of Uluru is not a place you will see anymore!

One place no one will ever see is the rooms in Area 51 where they keep the aliens.
