Placido Domingo at 21! - Lucia di Lammermoor - Tombe degli avi miei

New operatic tenor, twenty-one year old Plácido Domingo, sings the aria "Tombe degli avi miei" from the final scene (the "tomb scene") of Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor in a performance from November 26, 1962 in Fort Worth, Texas. Domingo had sung zarzuela parts as a teenager, but had only recently begun singing in operas when this recording had been made. Lily Pons co-stared in this production.

I just finished watching him perform this in 1981 with Pons and Patricia Wise at the Teatro de las Zarzuelas (a friend's mom vhs taped it and he ripped a disc of it for me; sadly, it was very loved repeatedly and so the quality is sketchy, but, it is watchable). The passion and heartache he infuses this aria with, while making all those layers of music pour from that amazing throat, going from sky splitting highs to silky soft whispers, drives me to the point of losing it.
