Che voce! Adoro Placido Domingo!

What a pity that the image is so fuzzy and unclear. This is undoubtedly the most beautiful version of this aria we have ever seen or heard. Placido Domingo deserved every moment of this tremendous ovation!

You are right, Carol. But this version is all what we have.

Domingo is a smart singer. He sings this 1/2 step lower than composed, which is debatable due to tuning of the times. The difference between a B and Bflat is an ocean in the tenor voice, plus the best note in the tenor voice is a Bflat. So, he just wails on it. Doing this a half step lower makes this aria completely different to sing, imho, however, the B natural is much more brilliant than the Bflat, so when it is done it is much more sensational. Lets face it, this ain't bad, and it is certainly smart.

Thank you for sharing this with us, it is a jewel of a performance thankfully captured at least on VHS videotape, not lost to oblivion. If you have any information about where this was performed and who played Lucia, I would be most grateful. He delivers a towering and tender rendition that is heart stopping. The anguish and sorrow he imbues in his voice renders the aria even more poignant. Wow. No wonder he received nearly five minutes of bravos and ovation forcing him to break scene to acknowledge the high praise. It looked to me as if he was moved to tears. It always makes me so happy to see him receive the accolade he so richly merits. Mil gracias.

Very good, even if half a tone down. But Pavarotti owns this role, cannot be compared

It was only 1/2 tone down

I have an old question that I hope someone will answer me someday: in the final scene of this performance at the Teatro de la Zarzuela, Edgardo goes to Lucia, who has just died and is stretchered to the cemetery, and he lifts her veil and then kisses her. The question is this: why does he carefully keep the veil folded around her face so that the public cannot see her face? Thank you very much in advance! (Unfortunately, the link that @tenorissimo provided a few months ago no longer works, so if you have a fresh one, I'd appreciate it if you share it.)
