Medieval Plague Stones are found across England and are relics of the medieval black plague, Often neglected, the historical function of these, usually secluded stones is almost entirely forgotten

have to point out the oldest known victim found so far was 5000 years back and in the Latvia/Estonia area, everything else since is a variation of the original , the oldest know in the UK is from 4000 years old, different strain of Y Pestis as it hadn't yet mutated to be lethal as it was later, and the latest theory is it came originally from beavers, a very complex subject that they are finding more about fairly quickly now

The fact that the historical function of these stones is almost forgotten is a stark reminder of how quickly we can forget the past.

Very interesting 🙂 I've worked on at least 3 churches that have plague pits (been an historic buildings conservator most of my working life) Westbury Sub Mendip. Tawstock and Holcombe Church. The last one is redundant, the entire village died and are burried in a mound at the front of the church (including the vicar) The farmer has been cutting into it with his plough and bones are sticking out 😬
@Traveler13
@Traveler13 4 ай бұрын
Ohh that is disturbing but interesting, should the farmer be stopped, it just sounds wrong that does

@@Traveler13 Too late now, he's probably got a grant to grub it up 🙄 Don't touch the bones though, still might have the plague bacteria. Bloke on one of the conservation firms caught it after digging in a churchyard. All I caught was Weill's disease 😬

It's important to remember the lessons of history, even when they're as grim as the Black Death. These plague stones help us do just that.

This was fascinating...BUT, the constant graphic pop-ups nagging me to subscribe were intrusive, distracting and annoying. I'm grown, know how (and when) to subscribe. It was like being nagged for a tip. The video and narrative were great. Not subscibing.
