That battery shoe, on your ProVap, is a very early design and has been changed in the current design to fix that issue.

Thanks for the info on the OAV units, I made my own 120VAC version with an inkbird controller and some band heaters, but would love to advance to the battery powered units some day soon. I have a hole drilled in my slatted rack that I vape into from the back of the hive. When I do, I plug the front entrance with a rag, works well for me.

Those plants maybe wild radish?? for deer food? or buckwheat. Suppose the drought shut down the golden rod. It should produce some pollen I would think. Your daughter is so cute, looks like her mom. Have a good week Nathan.

You look and sound tired this week. Its a sign of a busy year. Good tip on the smoker heat. I had to put gloves on in one of my yards this week. To early and im to old to take that many stings to the hand. I don't use a landing board on my hives and i really like the instavap. It works well with my system. I cant tell if you're having a bad year or just a trying your patience year. For those years just keep the bees healthy and strong to be ready for next year.

Try some nitrile gloves Nathan. I think they make a big difference plus keep your hands clean. They can sting through them but it seems to mask the mammal smell and they tend not to sting nearly as much.

I have heard from other beekeepers here in Texas the same experience: Bees in shade are more grumpy and worse SHB.

Hey Nathan, I agree with your statement about beeyards in shaded areas being more feisty. I have one that is shaded, and it happens to be my quarantine yard from cut-outs, and it has more hive beetles and is a little more grumpy. I can help but wonder if the bees are a little more grumpy because of hive beetles..

I definitely agree on the Bees in the shade being more "grumpy" or defensive. That has been my experience.

I’ve started planting turnips in the late summer for deer in fall. We let them bolt and flower in spring and the bees go nuts over the early season nectar flow….about the same time as autumn olive. Mow it and disk in late July, and it does a pretty good job of re-seeding itself.

I've also noticed bees in the shade are grumpier. But I am happier in the shade so its a toss up. haha

Will raising the hives help? Do they get over run with mites because they are so close to ground?

Prolly a radish, it will be white and almost 2 foot long when done, deer like them, around here they plant them to break up packed soil because they go so deep.

I need to get an instaVap at some point. I’m still using butane vaporizers and I know I’m not controlling the heat well….but it’s convenient and hardy and I don’t have to use electronics yet. But I’ll switch over soon. It was likely a quick demo, but do you usually leave the bottom board open when vaporizing or do you seal it up for a few minutes to maximize the OA effects?

That was a good mite kill. The hive I dropped a single covered Formic Pro strip into on Sept 2 had 607 mites drop on the first day of treatment. DB

I hesitate to say anything but….. that install looks pretty dirty. I suggest buying one of their silicone tops. Good protection.
